Fruit flies
« on: September 22, 2013, 06:05:10 PM »
Fruit flies have been pretty bad around my house for a couple of weeks. My wife looked on line and I built a trap that is cool and works good. Get a bottle   and put fruit(watermelon) vinegar and soap in the bottom, then make a paper funnel with a tiny opening at the bottom. Cut the funnel so it is not to high over the bottle top. Sit the funnel in the bottle then watch the fruit flies for entertainment. So far I would say about 20 have drowned, and there is about 20 more on the sides of the bottle and on the funnel inside the bottle. Now there is not nearly as many flying in the house.

We tried the same thing for regular flies, but we used the top of a 20 oz. soft drink for the funnel and the bottom for the liquid.  We also used just sugar water.  It did not work as well as we had hoped.

I have done this as well, with a little beer and a gatorade bottle. Potatoes work really well too.

Unfortunately, this is a treatment. Later, I found a cure, which is to A) not leave produce out too long or B) keep it in the fridge.  Once it starts to ferment you are screwed.

I find leaving a half drunk can of beer lying around works well. Unfortunately also putting down an open can for 2 minutes before continuing to drink also works well urgh.

The flies are were everywhere, including outside. They would come in as soon as you open the door, I could see them waiting outside of the screen. However we did put the kitchen trash can outside away from the house.
Today I don't see any flying around the house this morning, about 15 still walking and flying in the trap. So far so good.

Have you ever opened a moist compost bin on a baking summers day? Fruit flies, you haven't seen anything yet.

I haven't had the pleasure, thank goodness.

You're not missing out on much. You know what they say, time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

I once went away on holiday for three weeks  at the same time as my flatmate did. We forgot to empty the kitchen bin before we left over a scorching summer. Coming home was like entering a horror film. The bin bag actually buzzed as we took it down to the dumpsters.

We then spent the afternoon armed with various aerosols, and dishcloths. The aerosols make the flies slow and dopey, the dishcloths make an effective weapon to stun the little gits without splattering them. When stunned and twitching, we lobbed them out of the window.

I'm now paranoid of any insect within my walls and will forcibly evict any I see.

That's a good question. How would he have even kept track of them? Maybe god bestowed Noah with fruit fly finding grace.

I think all the flies are gone now. :) There is about 100 dead ones in the trap. :)

Fruit flies have a life expectancy of only a few days.. they must be reproducing a lot to maintain a noticeable presence in your home.

It wasn't fun, but they're gone now. The trap worked good.

Did you just use the bottle trap? or did you implement creative ways to trap them?

1 bottle trap took care of them all.
