How did you discover FES?
« on: September 02, 2013, 05:38:07 PM »
We all had a day one, which means we had to learn about Flat Earth Society from somewhere.  So, where did YOU first learn of the existence of FES?

My astronomy teacher was teaching the history of astronomy and when he got to the part where people start to believe in a round earth, he briefly mentioned the existence of the modern-day Flat Earth Society.  So I googled it and found the site.

I was playing Trivial Pursuit (it's a trivia board game for those who don't know) and one of the questions was "which of these is a real group?" The choices were 1. Slug Eaters Anonymous 2. United Tuba Players and 3. The Flat Earth Society. No one got it right. I didn't believe it so I googled it. And here I am.

I first heard about the Flat Earth Society while scrolling through the Internet and nearly died of laughter. I had been brainwashed from day one that the earth is round and found this unfamiliar truth rediculous. I decided to look through the website and see what they taught and if they were serious, so I entered the FAQ. I say that they supported a polar map rather than the Mercator map I thought they did so that made it less funny. I tried to find any possible scientific fallacy, but they seemed to have an answer to almost any objection. I started to have a feeling of being convinced, but I tried to deny it as much as possible because I was so naive. Anyway, I eventually found out about Zetetic Astronomy and other flat earth literature and became somewhat of a devil's advocate. Then after half a year of studying FET, I couldn't help it, I was already a closet flat earther. I officially declared that I believe the Earth is flat and decided it to say it loud and proud. Eventually, I made an account on here, and that's about it

Someone once insulted me by saying that I probably think the earth is flat. I hadn't considered it prior to that, so I looked it up, and voilá! It's flat! Who knew?

I did a Google search one day of "the earth is" and looked at the auto-complete results.  "Flat" was the 2nd result listed, so I clicked it.  That was nearly 5 years ago.  It is still the 2nd result.

As a matter of fact I just tried it while logged in. Second result is FES.

Then I logged out and tried it. FES is nowhere to be found.

So don't get your hopes up, the world isn't taking you seriously.

You didn't mention how you found FES.

I honestly can't remember. Which is sad cause it wasn't long ago. Then again I usually come on here during work and I wake at 2 am for that after a solid 3 hours of sleep. I probably just found it from browsing information. I tend to link jump on Wikipedia when I'm bored.

Read about it once. 2 years later, I remembered it and looked into it. Started lurking for a while then made an account.

As an aside, your teacher was probably lying to you. The Myth of the Flat Earth is incredibly prevalent in American schools. There was never a point in human history where educated individuals knew the Earth to be flat. Aristotle taught RET in Ancient Greece, and the educated elite and sailors likely believed it thousands of years before that due to the Sinking Ship Effect. Columbus didn't do a damn thing besides enslave some people and spread smallpox.

Personally, I was researching weird conspiracy theories out of boredom and stumbled upon the society. I was an angry noob of one of the worst sorts.

I was going through asinine groups of people (anit-vaxers, Young Earth Christians, etc.) and this was just the next step in the procession.  It just so happened that this was the first group that had an active forum to discuss the theory for me to crush the stupidity, now just 5 months later I've converted.

I was arguing for RE from day 1.  Lately I've taken to only arguing against Scepti's theories.  I'm honestly more interested in the community aspect now than the shape of the Earth, since I have discovered the truth.

This is the path that the reasonable people follow.  Everyone eventually comes to the conclusion, the truth.

And what lead you to that. Don't just state that it's the truth. I mean, what was the clincher.

The clincher is in traveling North or South without drifting to the East while flying.  But this isn't the thread for what caused us to convert, but rather what brought us here.
