Bullet points are broken
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:27:53 PM »
Selecting a list and clicking the bullet points button only gives the first item a bullet point.

This means you always have to do it manually which is irritating and takes a while.

I don't expect anyone to fix it as no one gives a crap, but the fault is there and logged should a keen admin one day be appointed and go back through some of these old suggestions.

I'll make a big shout out to future FES users too. This message is from the distant past when the forum was owned by that awful Daniel guy that you successfully ousted in the end. If you ever feel nostalgia for him just remember how nothing ever got done.

That is because bullet points don't work that way you muppet. Highlighting text and clicking the bullet point button will recognize the entire highlighted area as 1 bullet point. Is it that hard to just create the LI tags while you are creating your bullet points? It's simple here is how you do it.

  • Before you create your list, click on the bullet point button
  • Populate LI tags with your points
  • Add additional LI tags if necessary
  • ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

So if I have 10 points, I have to make 10 [li][/li] tags?

That's my point. Its broken. Why am I doing it manually when there should be a function that does it for me? The function is broken.

You don't create it manually, you simply copy and paste the previous tag. It's not broken. The problem you are experiencing isn't a feature. That doesn't mean it is broken.

I may not know how SMF works but I have a pretty damn good idea of how bullet points work. If you are wondering what SMF is, it is a free open source forum software. Did you think FES developed their own software? Do you think they developed that WYSIWYG editor? Learn how to write a few simple tags and stop identifying a lack of features as "bugs".

SMF isnt "just the brand.". It is a forum software which uses a WYSIWYG editor.

BBCode is the name of the language used to create things. Things like erm let me see.. bullet points.

Here is a useful link which you learn more about BBCode on this awesome new website I found called Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

You can learn how to create things like bullet points, quotes or tables.

I'm not really following you on all your threads. This is the only one. In fact you replied to 2 of my other threads. This is the first thread I've replied to of yours. I'm just helping you out here. :)

Oh yeah, it's broken.

A single line creates two points automatically even if nothing is selected.  This is a problem.
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

I am a terrible person and I am a typical Blowhard Liberal for being wrong about Bom.

Just put [*] before each line, and SMF will turn it into a bullet point for you. Case closed.

That isn't fixing the broken function, is it? Its making me spam [*] before every entry.

It's not really possible to make a button always do the correct thing in this case. Is it really that difficult for you to type an extra few characters on each line so the BBcode parser knows what you mean?

Look, I understand you're used to having computers think for you, but sometimes they make the wrong decision. That's when you need to step in and clear things up. Fortunately, in this case it isn't very much work.

Can't it just be fixed? I know how to work around it, but the whole point of computers is that they increase productivity.

If you really want it fixed, download the Javascript that implements that function, fix it yourself, and send the admins a patch.

Do you think the admins will administer my changes?

If you can catch John Davis's attention, probably. You'd have a better chance of it being fixed than you do by not fixing it yourself.
