Samuel Rowbotham AKA Parallax
« on: July 30, 2013, 11:28:45 AM »
Hey! I've been looking for a photograph (or any kind of depiction) of Parallax and so far I've come up empty-handed. On a few sites I've seen a very low-resolution photo of a man in a top hat labelled as Samuel Rowbotham. Does anyone know the source of this image?

Could you post the image you have? I know there are images of him without any hat. Let me have a look.

OK, my picture is from a book called Flat Earth by a hideous bitch called Christine Garwood (p132).

Thanks Ævan, that's fantastic!

And Lord Wilmore, this is the low-resolution image that I found on a Spanish-language website:

That's just a stock picture of an old-timey gentleman.  One member here uses it as his avatar, so that's probably how it was linked to Rowbotham.

Yeah, that's not Rowbotham.

Thanks!

Does anyone know what John Hampden looked like? Are there any photos of him?

Ok,

Alfred Russell Wallace
Charles Lyell
William Carpenter

I have no picture of Hampden. I know a lot about him, for example he was related to Bishop Hampden, but I don't have a photo. Why is his appearance important? Do we get a motive with these requests? If its a good motive, it'll give me enough of an incentive to find you a picture.

That's really unnecessary. While admittedly she did a poor job of filtering her biases in the work, she was most affable -- and the book is worth buying at anyrate. Additionally, it's entirely possible the whole thing might not have been published given a more fair or open presentation of the material.

We were hardly going to get a glowing endorsement from her, anyway.

In response to Ævan's question, I'm working on an art project about the Victorian flat-earthers and I'm collecting reference materials.
