How did you find out about this drug if your doctor wasn't the one to bring it up?

I'm the kind of boring bastard you want on your pub quiz team.

Ugh.  Try finding one of these nowadays where everybody doesn't cheat.  Smartphones  >o<

I thought pub quizzes were about answering the fastest.
I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

3. Not really. They're just steroids.
They aren't steroids.

Are they not? You said they were hormonal. Most hormones are steroids.
Steroids are artificial sex hormones. These aren't those. Also I won't be taking stupid quantities like a body builder.

Steroids are any fat-based (as opposed to protein-based) hormone, as well as artificial hormones which mimic the effects of steroid hormones. Cholesterol, for example, is a steroid hormone.

I didn't mean it the way you took it. I was just thinking out loud about the medication and how dangerous, or not, it actually would be. Assuming it's a steroid, and I refuse to do the research as to whether or not it is, it's most likely naturally produced in your body. Increasing the amount via a medication should be that big of a deal in the short term. It's when you do it for years that those things become problems.

So I'm going to betray both myself and FES tradition and make a serious reply here.

I have beta blockers to deal with anxiety - they're a last line of defence if relaxation/distraction techniques don't pull me out of an impending panic attack. They are extremely effective at regulating the heart and adrenal glands but they don't do anything directly for shaking/trembling and other such signs of nerves. That said by slowing the heart they allow you to relax and get a hold on your situation better.

Be aware that they can make you too relaxed and quite drowsy, bad for if you need to concentrate hard. In fact, if you're already tired/sleepy, then taking one is going to make you feel very spaced out indeed. They slow you down in general but it won't be too much of an issue if you're only taking them now and again to deal with certain situations.

They work pretty fast (10-20 mins) and last for hours though I think much of the initial relaxation is a placebo effect. One thing I've worried about is becoming dependent on them. Sounds silly, but as I said they're one of the last things I will consider to fight anxiety, because once you've taken them that's the last of the guaranteed chemical assistance gone and it's then down to you to keep the nerves in check. In that sense they're not a get-out-of-anxiety-free card.

I didn't rate them personally. I was prescribed them a few years ago. I suffer from agro phobic induced panic attacks, or that's what my doctor coined it as anyway. I found they did nothing for me and I stopped taking them. Maybe I should try again if you guys rate them. I work nights are get the feeling of impennding doom for things most people take for granted.

Nothing worse than shitting yourself because the que I'm the shop is too long.

So took my first blocker this afternoon. Mostly as a trial run as I had a telephone interview. Enough to make me feel a little nervous. Anyway, I couldn't notice the tablet. I felt just like me, but I wasn't nervous in the slightest. Didn't feel like I could get nervous. As much as the idea of taking performance enhancing drugs appals me, I felt fine and performed like a pro.
So with reluctance probably would recommend. No side-effects, no symptoms, no drowsiness. Just me but when I'm not nervous.

I think I passed the interview. The guy said right at the end he has "6 other candidates to interview but would be very surprised if I wasn't called for the next stage to meet him". So I guess that's this bit done. Go me.

So I guess the thread could ask any of the following questions

1) Have you used beta-blockers to combat 'performance anxiety'?
2) Do you think this is unethical?
3) Are you surprised how easily I got these incredibly powerful drugs from a doctor?
4) Do you think this is just everyday crap and not even worth a thread about?

Additional: I need to test them. Because my resting heart rate is under 50 (I exercise a lot), the doctor is worried that my heart rate may be lowered further and be a bit dangerous. So I need to test it before the interview in a situation where I would be scared some time in the next couple of weeks.

5) How should I get scared? Bungy jump? Dive with sharks? My sister suggested cage fighting but she's a bitch. >o< I need to be frightened, not harmed or made sick.

1. Yes. Viagra many years ago.
2. No.
3. Not really.
4. Yes and no. Its everyday crap, but it is worth a thread.
5. Don't be silly.

You are thinking too much about little things. If you want to be prepared for an interview, practice! Be like a politician, rehearse your answers. Remember to smile, tell yourself a joke or think of something funny and laugh to yourself. Then remember that you are the best person for the job, they need you. Tell them why they need you. Tell them how you will contribute to their team.

Thanks for the advice. Actually I played the team card in an earlier interview. It did not go well. Basically because they have built a swanky multi-million dollar office in London, filled it with people who don't actually spend any time in the UK + the person who gets this job.

They are asking lots of questions like ... are you ok being left to work on your own for 3 months at a time? Do you get lonely?

And I'm like ... you are going to pay me a fortune to sit in a designer office block by myself having all manner of wild sex on the photocopier with posh London women in suits who walk by, and you want to know if I'll be ok? Yeah, I'll be fine.

Anyway, basically I decided to take the drugs for the following reasons.

1) I really want this job. The pay is over $93k a year + benefits. In fact the guy I spoke to said he was desperately fighting to be able to pay higher wages than that. And its a seriously lovely job. I'll give more details after the process is over one way or the other, but it mostly involves travelling around the world in brand new business jets and talking to some of the wealthiest people on earth as a kind of engineering consultant. Then working from a designer office in between.
2) I haven't actually done an interview in more than 15 years. I've always got work through word of mouth or via contract agencies or promotions or whatever.
3) I just want to give myself the best chance I can. Why leave something to chance that can be so easily controlled?
4) Inb4 "r u gonna b working for teh conspiracy?". The answer is yes. One of the biggest players in the game. I have to eat too!  >o<
