New Laptop
« on: June 03, 2013, 11:12:56 PM »
Need a laptop for school. Going to be word processing mostly, only games being played are things like CSS and Dota 2.

My preferred specs:

i5 3rd gen (looks like 4th gen will be too pricey).
Small SSD, not HDD.
Windows 7, Ubuntu or drivers only. No windows 8 or touch screen shenanigans.
Looks like I'll have to go with integrated Intel 4000 graphics if I want something under 15" that has good resolution and is reasonably priced.
13.3 inch screen.
Under or around $1000.

Anyone able to recommend anything? It's hard to find things at those specs.

Holy fuck there's nothing on the market that has those specs. This is ridiculous.

Battery life?

5 hours + is good.

You won't get 5+ hours with any of those Specs. Too much power useage.

Also, you can wipe win 8 and put anything else on.

Most ultrabooks cite upwards of 6-7 hours. A lot of W8 laptops come with touch screens by default too, so it's just a way of keeping those away. Removing W8 is also a pain that I can't be bothered doing unless I find an amazing deal on a W8 system.

Not gaming, but if I want to boot up DotA 2 or TF2 I don't want it to shit itself. This means minimum of Intel HD 4000 graphics with a i5 processor.

I'm glad you can at least admit that DOTA2 and Hatshop2 aren't games.

Can I recommend the Yeemote Leloong?  It features a highly sophisticated Linux based operating system and is very easy to setup and get going.  Driver support couldn't be better and easier.  2013 is the year of the Linux Desktop you know, so why not jump on the bandwagon and let Linux make your life easier???

You'll spend hours configuring drivers for complex functionality like wireless networking, USB support, and disk burning.  You'll pour through countless configuration files, support forums and tech blogs trying to figure out why your volume won't turn down.

Worried about easy to install software?  Don't!  You'll be able to issue obscure shell commands such as this:  options sb esstype=1688 io=0x220 irq=5 dma=0 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330 almost every day!

Join the fun won't you?  After all... it's free!

Well, it sure as shit isn't going to run ArmA, and I'll have my entire steam library on it to choose from. I mention DotA 2 because it's more recent.

More and more Haswell options are being announced now that it's June. Hopefully something relatively cheap comes along.

How about the Inspiron 14z?
I priced one out with W8 (but you should be able to make it W7 if you buy W7 and wipe the laptop).  It has a 32GB SSD drive but it's looks like a hybrid.  Still, not bad.
Battery life is a bit doggy at slightly less than 5 hours.

Thanks Dave, but the screen has 1366x768 res, which is just too low for me. I also hate Dell for fucking me on my last laptop. Hoping some good deals come around in June with the EOFY and first Haswell products coming out.

What resolution do you want?

Have you considered an AMD laptop? You said word processing and some light gaming, fits perfectly. Get a Trinity/Richland laptop without dedicated gpu. It will cost much less than $1000 and the gaming performance will be much better. It might also have more battery life than a non-Haswell Intel rig.

What resolution do you want?

Anything higher than 1336x768 res, I'd like the extra work space attributed by bigger resolutions and I like the extra detail. Usually get a bigger resolution with a discrete card as well. 14" with 1600x900/1080p is preferred.

I'll be honest, I doubt you can find a laptop like that in your price range. You basically want a mid-range gaming laptop for a basic work laptop price.

Yeah, that's my problem. I just want a decent processor, screen and SSD without a fucking touchscreen or windows 8. There's a nice Gigabyte laptop coming out in August which appears to fit my needs and budget, but I need it at the start of August for next semester.

Everything loads faster, and I don't need anything beyond 128 gigs as my home PC already has 2TB.

It is the SSD that is pushing the price past your budget.

If you were to use a system like SanDisk's 'ExpressCache', that would just about get you everything you want for the price. Samsung's 500GB hdd has 24Gb cached to the motherboard so it boots fast.

At the moment I'm watching sites for good deals/coupons, and waiting for Haswell releases towards July/August. I'll either get a Haswell laptop at ~$1200 or buy something in clearance mode.

Strongly considering this even though it doesn't fit a number of categories, just because it's such a good deal at the moment. Knock down the RAM to 8GB and it costs $1079 delivered.
