I got Elementary OS Luna installed on my laptop. I haven't used it much yet, but I really like the look of it.

pure Linux

Yeah yeah I know.  I just didn't know how to phrase "A linux distro in which no emulation ,compatibility layer, or virtualization software is used to make Netflix work".  And that just sounded too long.

FYI:
Hulu works in pure Linux, Netflix does not.

Incorrect.  I use Netflix quite often.
How?  Netflix won't work without silverlight DRM and moonlight won't put DRM support in and, in fact, has stopped development.

I wrote that before I saw your post about compatibility layer.  Yes, I use wine for Silverlight.

Netflix plays natively on a lot of Linux based devices.  It just does not work on a Linux desktop with out tricking the Netflix people into thinking it is a Windows desktop.

It is a conspiracy.  I remember reading that one of the Netflix board of directors used to be one of the Microsoft board of directors.  I might have that wrong, though.

Hulu and Crackle come close, but don't have the same quality of movies.

I am not sure what you mean by unstable.  It uses flash, and has commercials.  Are you having flash problems, or ad problems?

Lots of buffer issues, some video corruption.  Some episodes get skipped for no reason.  Some even do the skipping in the middle of watching an episode.

Netflix has buffer issues too but not as often.

I got Steam installed, and I downloaded L4D2 Beta. However, it didn't work.
It says I am missing S3TC textures and will need to install some. I am not very familiar with them, though.
Has anyone had the same problem? Know the solution?

Well, that's all they got.
I found this code that might work: force_s3tc_enable=true

Assuming you're having the same problem I just did (the message you put here doesn't seem exactly the same, but it could be related) and that you're using a Debian-like distribution, it can be fixed by installing the package libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 for the i386 architecture using your package manager.

This command should do the trick:

aptitude install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386
