The Creation of a Flat Earth
« on: April 11, 2013, 11:05:31 AM »
Does FET have a creation story? How does FET account for how the world was created into a disk? This leads me to another question, is Earth the only flat thing in the solar system, or are the Sun, Moon, other planets, etc also disk-like? Gravity is not only the thing in RET that keeps everything down, it is also the paramount rationale for the shape of the planets.

The earth is round because the space man said so.

the Earth?

The infinite earth, yes;  Though religious texts lately have made me question the nature of this, and of its role in time.  Can we have a creation story if time is meaningless?

Considering the role of the story is to create meaning, then why not?  It may be arbitrary, but then aren't all religious texts?

This is pure speculation, but nature has been observed creating perfect discs of ice in rivers.

What does perfect mean in this context?  As perfect as the Hubble mirror?

I don't mean a geometrically perfect circle, of course. The ice discs I'm referring to are precise and notable enough to be featured in journals and such. See this Wikipedia article.

Those disks also rotate  :-X

(Edit: In fact, the rotation is believed to be the cause. Can't imagine a scenario where that helps the motionless Flat Earth Theory)

I'd hardly call those "perfect" discs.

Presumably they also cease to rotate after a period of time.

That's a picture of a distinct phenomenon called "ice pans." Here are a few pictures of ice discs:

It's at this point in time that someone claims that these photographs are clearly faked in Pro-FET propaganda.

What makes you think they cease to rotate?

My post was pure speculation, anyway. Even if one doesn't hold to a flat Earth model, it's still a pretty cool phenomenon.

What makes you think they incessantly rotate? The water resists the rotation of the ice circle, anyway. It makes sense that it'd eventually come to rest.

This is becoming really silly. Just accept the fact that God made infinite earth, its not meant for us to figure out how he did it.  Simple approach and trusting God is best.

While I'm pretty sure you're a troll, I'll still argue with you. Why should we axiomatically accept something that can be scrutinized further?

First of all, I really don't attempt to join the scientific discussions on FES at all, since I'm more interested in the philosophy of it; second of all, posting such parochial appeals to religion as "just accept the fact that God created the infinite earth" is blatantly an attempt to mock the narrow-mindedness of the God of the gaps.

God is philosophical subject isn't it? If he didn't create flat earth and if you are not interested in the science of it, then what are you even talking about?

Yes, and I love learning about theology. I do believe God created the Earth, but, accepting or rejecting that, the mechanism by which the Earth formed is in discussion here.

I'm not going to "just accept" anything that people tell me God did, because otherwise we would be able to sell our daughters into slavery and beat our slaves and not be punished as long as they got up after a couple days.

'Part of the water resists the rotation, but part of the water causes the rotation too. I don't think it would remain a circle if it wasn't spinning, it would erode unevenly from the water. Cool phenomena though, for sure.
