Reading comprehension is not your strong point.

I never knew history majors felt compelled to narrate their own life.

What is the point of a history major???

Be an engineer, be useful!
My dumb redneck coworker said this the other day. Some people just don't understand how things work.

History majors can work with the government and be extremely useful. They tell dumb, narrow-sighted people why something does or doesn't exist or why something did or did not work. America doesn't appreciate historians. Look at America. This is obviously a country that doesn't understand how institutions, laws, or people work in the grand scheme of things. No hindsight, no foresight.

The reason American history sucks is because we're taught a bunch of super patriotic bullshit. American history is actually kind of interesting once you weed out all the crap. Do you ever feel like choking David Barton for ruining everything?
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Well sure, because of everything he is. But college courses on American history don't really touch any of his ideologies (except when talking about Evangelicals in general). There are always interesting and exciting moments, however I'm not really enthusiastic about the 1700 or 1800s at all regardless of region.

But my point wasn't really how our history is terrible, it was more about Americans' perspective of history. Everyday I more clearly realize that the people who say that history is useless are extremely ignorant of the world in general. My redneck coworker bashed history, but constantly wonders why things are the way they are and then I try and teach her something but it's too late. The school system has failed her. It almost makes me want to be a teacher.

Probably, but I have to sprinkle some knowledge in there somewhere to survive. And she doesn't want to lose me as her partner, so I guess she can handle it.

You'd probably hate being a teacher, since you'd be forced to teach the very boring version of history.  Lots of people who thought they could make a difference in education have had their dreams crushed.

Have you ever watched Chris Rodda's videos where she debunks Barton's claims? They're all on YouTube, and they're actually pretty interesting.

I always hated American history, especially the Revolutionary War and the Industrial Revolution.

Yeah, most likely. She makes me think about it but I don't think I could ever stand to actually do it.

No, sounds great though. I'm sure his claims are not difficult to debunk. No one should have ever thought that guy was legit.

Meh, I prefer the Seven Years War and the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. My dad was an American history professor which seems so terrible to me. The older stuff is far more interesting.

Oh, yeah I don't like the Civil War stuff either. It's probably not as boring as it's taught in high school, though. I guess they have to be careful not to piss anyone off.

It was still fun working at a Civil War site and talking about it all day, but the Civil War specialists/fanatics kinda scare me.

What is the difference, to you, between discovery and creation?

The English language, for example, is created. The mathematical equation existed before humanity and will exist after humanity, English will not. Thus math is discovered, English was created.

Mathematics describes abstract ideas, but mathematics itself is not those abstract ideas.  Its a language to both communicate these ideas and to study them.

Math is the idea. The human comprehension of a physical existence. The universe does not change, only our understanding of it. Thus math can not change and must be discovered, not created, little by little.

for the record: this question has been discussed at the beginning of the 20th century without a proper resolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_mathematics#Foundational_crisis). As there's little practical relevance to it to me it seems to be a matter of taste. also i guess it's not limited to just maths but something all formal languages have in common.

All able minded people are smart/dumb and average throughout their lives, it just depends on how people view smart/dumb or average in daily life pertaining to things in life which separates them.

I mean, is a lawyer smarter than a nurse? ...the simple answer for most would be, " of course the lawyer is smarter"...the truth is, the lawyer is only smarter in his/her profession but the nurse is smarter in his/hers.
Is  a person smarter, who can commit a large amount of info to memory, more smarter than someone who forgets half of it?... again it would appear so...but if the person with the computer memory constantly fumbles the words from that memory, would he/she be known as dumb.

Is a person with no schooling any less smart than someone who's life is spent at school gaining certificates, yet the person with no schooling has spent all his/her time learning to live off of the land learning survival skills and knowledge.

Is a dumb person a lawyer that pays cowboy builders 10 times the amount for roof work or the illiterate person that tells them to piss off?

Maybe we can have a happy medium here and all call ourselves "average."

This is a sterling read.

That's down to each individuals interpretation Berty.

However, most individuals would concur with robertotrevor's viewpoint.

One persons dumb, is another persons genius.

You are right. maybe the question should have "smarter than average" and "dumber than average" instead. but that is kind of implied already. So its not like someone should be called smart because he is not the dumbest person in the world.

You're not average, scepti. If the entire human population were plotted into a bell curve, you'd be so far from the mean that there would be no statistical difference between you and the X-axis.

Like I said, one person dumb is another persons genius and it works anyway you want it from smart to average to dumb in how each individual interprets it.

Oh ok. so you dont know what average is.

You can feel as average as you want. but if you are not average. you are not average. Thats pure logic.
