I've devised this clever little test to show us just how smart the average FES member is.

I'm pretty dumb but I like to pretend I'm smart. I'm going to go ahead and choose the "smart" option.

You're actually extremely dumb and you pretend that you're even dumber than that. You're banned from all of my polls for three days.

My personal motto is 'Populi redente' which is the closest nice-sounding Latin for 'People are Stupid.' I include myself along with the 'people.'

I am of the opinion that an average person's IQ is probably generally ~100.

IQ quotients are adjusted so that the average is always 100. The test doesn't, in reality, result in a "real" score of 100 on average.

i.e. no matter how smart or stupid a population of testers is, the average is always 100.

Dumb refers to the inability or lack of will to speak.  This may be a trait of the most intelligent.

That definition is bigoted.  Its simply in common use, so people don't seem to mind.   Refer to its roots in Norse.  That was the point of stating its definition based off of neurological basis -  all definitions of a word should be in mind when using a word;  why use a word that is ambiguous?   Especially when the power of words on the weak minded is so strong.

Words are what people make of them. Don't be so pompous to think that words have any concrete meaning at all. Humans define language (except mathematics), not the other way around.

Words can be what people make of them.  I never said we didn't define language.  Some people don't know how to make what they want out of them, however.  And words are definitely defined on a neurological basis.  And neurology is based off another machine at a higher level etc.  Its kinda faceted.

How would believing words have concrete meaning necessarily be pompous?

How is mathematics different from any other language?

Attributing a concrete significance to words allows you to say "no, this word means this." It is the kind of person that enjoys appearing "educated" despite missing the entire purpose of language. Language is for communication. If communication is achieved, then the purpose is fulfilled. We all knew what PP meant when he said "dumb," there was no reason for you to come in and try to be a pedant about the use of it.

How is mathematics different from any other language?

Mathematics exists outside the realm of humanity. We can not define it, only discover it. Mathematical equations are timeless and always mean the same thing.

I'm not being a pedant.  You are misunderstanding the point.  The point is everyone is dumb, intelligent, and average.

Furthermore, that is not my entire purpose for language, nor humanities.

I would argue that language comes from a neurological basis.  Babies make certain sounds to represent certain wants, in example.  Bees talk with no real existence of society or methodology to teach this.    bee language, ape language, dolphin language, common language, etc is no different.

What is the difference, to you, between discovery and creation?

Mathematics describes abstract ideas, but mathematics itself is not those abstract ideas.  Its a language to both communicate these ideas and to study them.

If you want to be in denial, that is your choice I suppose.

I'm not being a pedant.  You are misunderstanding the point.  The point is everyone is dumb, intelligent, and average.

That doesn't even make sense unless you're regarding separate subjects per person. Since we're obviously not doing that, then again, it doesn't make sense.

I would argue that language comes from a neurological basis.  Babies make certain sounds to represent certain wants, in example.  Bees talk with no real existence of society or methodology to teach this.    bee language, ape language, dolphin language, common language, etc is no different.

That would assume all of those languages are monolithic per species. Each species can develop various languages, thus destroying your "neurological basis" argument.

What is the difference, to you, between discovery and creation?

The English language, for example, is created. The mathematical equation existed before humanity and will exist after humanity, English will not. Thus math is discovered, English was created.

Mathematics describes abstract ideas, but mathematics itself is not those abstract ideas.  Its a language to both communicate these ideas and to study them.

Math is the idea. The human comprehension of a physical existence. The universe does not change, only our understanding of it. Thus math can not change and must be discovered, not created, little by little.

A fringe site such as this wouldn't be expected to pull a proper sample from the human population and thus it isn't strange at all that the average person wouldn't visit the Flat Earth Society.

I'm generally pretty smart when it comes to academic, maths test kind of stuff, but when it comes to such things as 'why am I holding this spoon' or 'what day is it' then I'm less well off.

This poll isn't comprehensive enough to properly evaluate anything. Not only can the participants not be tracked with their ideologies, but any measure of intelligence relies on filters like the participants honesty or their metacognition skills. Trolling, deliberate sabotaging, apathy, public recognition, etc can all effect honesty. As for metacognition, we cannot rely on the incompetent to accurately assess themselves. The second phenomenon alone is enough to bias polls which rely on self-assessment by its participants, towards everyone being "above-average".

If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.
