Thork, quick question. Does the sun also give off light horizontally as well as directly downwards? Or is the moon also a kind of 'spotlight' similar to the sun?

The cause of eclipses.
Before I proceed with your text I'd like to have a look at the record(s) of the sun and moon being eclipsed when both were above the horizon.

I dare to bump this request: where can I find a record of the sun and moon being eclipsed when both were above the horizon?

The so called selenelion is a banal phenomenon that occurs from time to time. It is easily explained as a case of atmospheric refraction. Type 'selenelion' on Google and you will find many references. Here a brief explanation:

Needless to say the FE'ers claim that this phenomenon disproves the Round Earth is the usual rubbish.
Q: Why do you think the Earth is round?
A: Look out the window!

The so called selenelion ...
...is completely different thing: a simultaneous observation of the Sun and of the eclipsed Moon. But not the "eclipsed Sun" and the "eclipsed Moon" at the same time, as suggested in the quoted text.
:)
Do you mean to say it was just a shameful negligence on part of the FE prophet?!
Can we blindly trust any other his statements then?

Who has claimed that this has ever happened or is even possible?

For some reason I could not set up the Google search to highlight the "of the sun and moon being eclipsed when both were above the horizon" pattern found in this page.

Victorian era writing can a bit confusing, but I believe that he was saying that the sun was above the horizon while the moon was being eclipsed, not that both were being eclipsed at the same time.

...I believe that he was saying...
Why didn't he use the proper astronomical term then?
Do you suggest an incompetence on part of the FE prophet?
