Where are all the bomb/drug/blood sniffing cats? And seeing eye cats, and police cats? Oh yeah, cats are only good at sitting on the window sill staring blankly at things and chasing phantom mice.

Cats are stealth hunters not trackers.  Their noses aren't as sensitive.  Their eyes are great at night vision but they are too smart to run around at night looking for dangerous people.

Cats may not be capable of most of the things that dogs are used as service animals for, but can still be trained to complete certain tasks.  They can open doors, fetch things, and they can also sense illness and symptoms of specific ailments (they can predict seizures pretty well).

Cats aren't just "antisocial" for no reason, they just tend to have a much higher sense of self preservation than dogs.  They're also not emotionally void creatures, they very clearly capable of empathy.  My cats have always been more friendly and cuddly when I'm sick.

They can also tell from body language when someone obviously doesn't like cats.  So if you don't like cats because they're assholes it's probably because they can tell you think they're assholes and they think YOU are an asshole for it.

Cats always come up to me. Even cats on the street. Even today at my friend's house, her cats couldn't leave me alone and they were friendly as hell. They're not all crazy antisocial.

And a bigger dog wouldn't attack and chase after a cat, ever. Right?

Besides, the cat probably just slapped that yappy little piece of shit dog.  Hardly the same as chasing it down and breaking its neck like a big dog (that isn't accustomed to cats) would do to a cat.

Whenever a dog tries to scare me away like that, I just walk right up to them, as if to challenge them. Invariably they just get nervous and back off. Then, I turn away and smirkingly say, "looks like he's all bark", while the credits begin and The Who plays.

I think I see the problem here. You, Parsifal and Nomad are all covered in hair, so the dogs must be recognizing you as one of them.

Not really.  Most of them are all bark and no bite at best, or flat out stupid and friendly.  I've met many, many dogs that if you act friendly towards them they're already your best friend.  Ever seen that show "It Takes a Thief"?  Pretty much every time those guys break into one of the homes that have a dog, it's either not a threat or they quickly deal with the dog by luring it into a room and closing the door.

Unless your dog is specifically trained for home protection, it's useless.

Unless you bring meat, or train them not to accept meat from strangers. Which is really hard. Never mind that this means thinking of your pet as tool rather than, you know, a pet.


I don't think cats are better than dogs, but I do think they make for much more manageable pets. A dog is a big responsibility. A cat is largely its own responsibility, and that is a good thing in a pet. That said, I'd love a dog. But I do sometimes wonder how much of that is convention, or a desire to be depended upon absolutely.

The logical conclusion is to own both; I have 2 dogs and 1 cat. Problem solved.

Oh, and all 3 love each other.
