The Flat Earth Society needs an anthem
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:54:49 PM »
It is possible to note the the symbols representing the Flat Earth Society: its logo and its motto. This all looks very beautiful... But, do not you think the society needs an anthem too? All nations and large organizations in the world have an emblem, a motto and an anthem. It would be very interesting to express what the society stands for and our unity and battle for the truth. What do you think about it?

Not exactly like Oh Canada, but I think we should work on a song that express musically our sense of unity and justice (battle for truth), or something like that.

I am a lyricist and poet.
I can work on the words if someone can come up with the music.

Great! Let's ask Wilmore or another mod, we will be pleased to see your art.

FES isn't a country.  We don't need an anthem or a theme song.  Perhaps an official Limerick.

Excellent idea. You can start a limerick thread.

This is something very personal, but I would like to say it here.

#" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Conquest of Paradise - Vangelis

During my early days on this forum, I've watched many videos about space-travel frauds in the wiki. One of them played this music in the background, and I really liked it. From this point on, this song was frequently associated with the Flat Earth Society in my mind. At the time, I said:

I really liked the music "Conquest of Paradise - Vangelis" and I think that could be adopted as the anthem of the Flat Earth Society.

Of course another song must be chosen. This has nothing to do with Flat Earth and this is entirely personal.

I thought that the secret handshake was a fist bump, then unroll your globular hand into a plain as you smoothly back your hands away.

There does come a point where this is kind of a dumb reply. What exactly desperately needs doing right now? The forum has a new skin, and there are changes in the works in the background. I'm reasonably active, and although John hasn't been around in a while, he did plenty in the earlier part of the year. The only 'Daniel-level' problem we have right now relates to the server, and that is being sorted.

I think it may be time to drop this as a running joke. It just isn't constructive.

They may not be constructive, but running jokes are a lot less work than thinking up new jokes.

I think the point people are making is more that the President-for-Life should have more than 1000 posts and be around for when things actually do need fixing. Personally I'm ambivalent, and I rather suspect Daniel does more than he gets credit for, but they do have a point.

He does have more than 1,000 posts. And he clearly is doing things around here.

I've been vocally critical of Daniel's inactivity in the past. But he's clearly not inactive, so what's the problem? The FES has a new podcast. The forum has a new skin. Server issues are being addressed as we speak. The forum and society continues to be funded out of his pocket.

Bearing that in mind, precisely who here is more active than Daniel?

As I said, I'm rather ambivalent to the whole situation. I personally think he's doing a fine job. But again, the problem people have with him, I believe, is that regardless of how active he is, he's never around. I exaggerated when I said he didn't have more than 1000 posts, but just barely.

Hi.  A couple things:

Yes, I'm not the most active person on the forums, but I do keep an eye on things and when there's a major problem, I'm pretty good about responding.  I imagine that anyone who's ever contacted me on Twitter about a serious technical problem on the site saw action pretty quickly.  Just because you don't see me posting a lot doesn't necessarily mean I'm not around.  And I do sometimes participate in threads as well, so it's not as if I'm a complete ghost on the forums.

Also, the Flat Earth Society is more than just the forums.  Adding materials to the library, email correspondence, memberships, the podcast, occasional batches of t-shirts, etc are also part of the job and you'd be surprised how much time a lot of that stuff takes.  And then there's background maintenance stuff that generally doesn't get noticed but would get noticed if it wasn't happening.

I know there was a period where, as Wilmore correctly pointed out, I wasn't very involved with the Society and it suffered a bit because of that.  But that was quite a while ago and certainly isn't the case now.
