I am not trying to defend anyone, but I think the banned person was making the same post in several threads, being rude, and most of his posts were low content. If we just allow people to do that, then the upper fora will turn into a playground in no time at all.
Frankly, I'd rather hand out two-day bans such as this one like candy than nag incessantly about manners. If you don't know that being a jerk is not acceptable, a PM or speech from me probably isn't going to make you see the light. If you don't already have them, then maybe you can learn them by consequences. Markjo politely asked, "Please don't ..." a hundred times a day. Noone ever paid him any mind; if anything, several of you treated him like bigger jerks than before. Giving the poster a short time out is not "aggressive", it's rehabilitory.
The poster in question started several threads on the same subject in less than a week, ignoring responses in favour of trying to be antagonizing. He's been here a full month, which is plenty of time to either contribute something useful to the discussion or move on. There is no need for a clutter of new threads by the same person on a subject going nowhere because he is simply repeating himself rudely instead of engaging the topic. Noone wants to read it.
... the noobs don't have anyone to fear...
While said in jest, this is the kernel of truth. The issue certainly isn't how draconian rule enforcement has been. If you cannot take part in civil discourse, confine yourself to angry ranting or move along. I don't understand why people come here to argue anyway. If don't register at a Space.com and tell them they are all rubes for falling for the hoax that is space exploration. To what end? People will believe what they will believe. And I'm certain that if I posted there in the antagonistic and condescending manner that posters here use, I would be banned after two posts.
I simply don't consider asking people to abide by our very lenient rules "being very aggressive towards posters for no reason", squevil. We can try to hug it out in 2013.
