5 Albums for your deserted island demise
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:00:56 PM »
I would bet there is a thread about this but it was made before StarBright was a member here so obviously I don't care about any of the answers it might contain.

So, if you were stranded on a deserted island what 5 albums would you choose to have with you and listen to for the rest of your life?

I would choose (in no particular order)

1. Franz Ferdinand - Tonight
2. Bob Dylan - Desire (if the deserted island gods allowed me to listen to outtakes or b-sides Abandoned Love would be swell to listen to)
3. Ryan Adams - Cold Roses (tough choice which Ryan Adams but I'll go with this one because it's long)
4. Weezer - Pinkerton
5. Hmmm... No. 5 is always the toughest choice... gotta have a female in there... Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Greatest Hits... oh wait... they don't have that. :( goodbye Dudley, Cheated Hearts, and Maps. So I'll choose It's Blitz.

What did you think "Arts and Entertainment" was for?

Staying up to date on movies and other pop culture stuff.

Music isn't an art or entertainment.  It isn't.

In no particular order, I'd pick...
1. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
2. Opeth - Blackwater park
3. Opeth - Deliverance
4. Jolly - Forty-Six Minutes, Twelve Seconds of Music
5. Adagio - Underworld

Don't make me pick!
But I'm pretty sure Dol Guldur and Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame by Summoning would be there.

1. Port Blue - The Airship
2. Port Blue - Arctic
3. Sky Sailing - An Airplane Carried Me to Bed
4. Owl City - Maybe I'm Dreaming
5. Emilie Autumn - Opheliac - The Deluxe Edition

Number two is only there because I couldn't think of a fifth. For the sake of variety I'd want something else, but it wasn't easy thinking of albums I could listen to over and over without getting tired of them at all, so I decided to just put Arctic in there.

Note, these don't exactly translate to my favourite albums (though #1, 4, and 5 are), just ones that I can listen to extensively without getting sick of them in the slightest.

I suppose these will do.

Pink Floyd              - The Division Bell
Nine Inch Nails     - And All That Could Have Been (preferably the complete double cd set, otherwise I'll go with the 'Still' cd if it's one or the other)
Chopin                 - Op.28
Tool                      - Lateralus
Devin Townsend  - Ki

I'm one those people that can set their player to random, and end up with Camille Saint-Saëns followed by Pantera followed by John Cash.

I like a wide range of stuff.

Is Ki that good?  I love Deconstruction, but it's really the first Devin Townsend album I've REALLY listened to.

29silhouette and I have similar tastes!

I've only just started listening to Chopin so I'm not too familiar with all his works, but I really like op. 9 no. 2. I love Tool and JC too. Pantera not so much  :)

I'd like to have with me:

Bryan Adams - Greatest Hits
James Taylor - Best of
Tchaikovsky - 3 ballets
NOFX - either Pump up the Valuum or White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean

Can the last one just be two singles on one cd? I can't decide between Kiss From a Rose by Seal and Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones.

I have Deconstruction, and I love it too.  Ki is quite mellow compared to it.  It's all on youtube.  The build-up for the last part of the song 'Ki' must be listened to with good headphones or a good stereo system at a loud volume though.

For the 5 albums, I'd almost pick his album 'Accelerated Evolution' just for the song 'Deadhead'.   Eight minutes of beautifully heavy guitars, top-notch singing and chilling, yet pleasing to the ears, screaming, all at a nice subdued pace.  (also easily found on youtube)

'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is another awesome album by him that would be a serious contender.

I guess I picked Ki, because it was the first I thought of.

I'm the kind of snob that usually only listens to full albums so I don't typically just listen to single songs on youtube unless I really get the urge to hear something that I don't have on hand immediately (usually while I'm out).  But I've been meaning to listen to more of his stuff.  Is Ghost any good?  I know it was released the same time as Deconstruction and was supposed to be the polar opposite in feel.

I'll post a little later, but I can tell you right now that all 5 albums will probably be compilations like "greatest hits of the 80's" and the like.
I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

Ghost is good too.  It is quite the opposite.  Much more relaxing and mellow sound.  One track actually fades into several minutes of rain and waves sounds with some instrumental buildup and stuff.  Some light rock and zen like instrumentals I guess.

If you're looking for more 'metal' type stuff from him, 'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is a great one.  It's the story of an alien that appears in orbit over Qatar and demands the worlds best cup of coffee.  Wide range of slow and heavy rock to fast rock to heavy metal with great melody.

I think it's quite reasonable, why only bring 5 bands to an island with you, when you can bring close to 100.

Why would I laugh? It seems like a good idea to me.

That is, if you actually liked the music on greatest hits compilations.

In fact, Saddam, this would be great for you. I'm sure there are plenty of massive dadrock compilations you can pick from.

I thought about making fun of you for Fall Out Boy, but they actually have a few decent songs.  Instead I'm going to make fun of you for Metallica S&M.  Fucking really?

(also now I have to listen to Styx, thanks bro)

In no particular order

Queen -Greatest Hits
Guns & Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pearl Jam - Ten
Radiohead - OK Computer
Michael Jackson - Thriller

*Disclaimer - this list is likely to be different tomorrow if my mood is different. I also note they are all male lead singers, but that's probably because I'd like to sing along on my desert island without trying to mimic a woman's voice. I also kind of want something classical in there, but there is no one album I could put my finger on.

Also Nomad picked 3 albums from the same band. Not even a very good band. In a few months you wouldn't be so into them and 3 of your albums got used on something that you will tire of.

Actually I can't decide. I kind of want some Elton John, some Lionel Richie, David Bowie. My list would annoy me after a while. I'd want more easy listening. Dunno. Its too hard a question. :(
