I'm not laughing because you are now using apple. I'm laughing because unless the app is "hello world" you have no chance of making it in anything less than a year.
I'm not you. I'll be cranking out apps in 3 weeks. It turns out objective C is very similar to some other languages I've used before. Its just syntax. I learnt vb in a month for a job, and at the time I'd never seen anything like it.
The issue isn't knowing the language as much as its knowing how to build what you want with it. But if you know VB then you have a decent start.

Just out of curiocity, did you ever build anything complex with vb or did you stick with simple forms?

And that's if it's something simple like a flashlight app.
When they learn that you lied they will flash fry you in the oil of civil court.
I didn't need to lie. The guy knows I can't write Objective C (actually couldn't this morning. Can now do basic stuff like loops and calcs and the basics of setting up. ) They are more interested in my Maths and physics skills anyway (don't laugh).
Fair enough.
And I'd believe that your physics skills are what they want. I suspect it's your knowledge of aircraft flight. Right?

Well at any rate keep us posted. I'm curious how long it'll take you to do the project.

I wrote all kinds of things including scripts to convert M$ data ready for IBM mainframe computation or very complex aeroplaney stuff that I'm not going to try to remember (I won't sleep). I was good at vb. I was good at vba too. Could do almost anything with a spreadsheet. Make games, interactive apps, Excel is a beast of a program.

Fair enough.

The guy figures its easy to get me to learn how to make an app, than to get his app makers to learn how to engineer. We went from there. He's also fairly realistic that engineers don't tend to have app making skills, so he's lending me all that iCrap to practise with. I'll probably make a practice app or two by myself. This I may be able to share with you assuming I finish it ... although I'll likely learn and move on before finished.

He has some medical apps (for doctors) he's working on and some other projects so if I get offered more work after, it might be for something like this. I won't be making the next angry birds in a hurry. So if that's what you meant by it'll take me a year to learn, then yeah, I'm not aiming for that level of proficiency.

Why do the brits feel the need to add an 'S' to math.  In the US, math is an umbrella word, it just makes me wonder how the difference got started.
I don't feel the need to add an 's'. I would say 'maths' so without thinking about it too deeply, I write 'maths'.

Apple's products are decent.  They are just way over priced considering their reduced functionality.  But i think you will like them, especially since you are getting them for free.  I mean that's the biggest reason to hate apple, 100% profit margins.

Well, I'm being 'loaned' the equipment (actually I may just be told to keep it, that's the vibe I got) but I'm worried its like being loaned some coke to borrow. If I like it, I'm gonna end up being an iSheep. :'(
I don't doubt its good. That's why people buy it. But I hate Apple's business practices so much. Also I know the phone is a 4S. So I'm already now gonna have iEnvy.

I'm being a whinging bitch I know. I'm getting a whole bunch of goodies for free, and some work, and potential for more ... just why Apple? I can't even think of a company I dislike more. Ohhh ooohhh, I could have ended up doing something Linux. Ok, silver lining.

@Beorn - Ok, finished loops, if and elses, basic syntax and math. Onto nested statements. Its all very deja vu. Its just syntax, but even that doesn't seem so alien. At the moment, I feel this is gonna be ok.

How are you going to learn? If you have no idea, this guy is awesome. Talks to you like you are an absolute idiot. Which is what I need. Makes it really easy.

He also does app building
https://www.youtube.com/course?list=EC53038489615793F7&feature=plcp

I've kinda got him on for the basics and am reading a bit at the same time.

What are you using? I'll prolly get a good book over the w/e.

Ok, that was a bit geeking, and it was a copy/paste from an Objective-C "Hello World" example. And I don't know O-C.

Meh I need to edit someone else's code so I might not have to learn too much about it. I'm going to play around with it this weekend and see how fast I can pick it up. Might be that I only have to change parameter settings (PLEASE ALL PRAY WITH ME FOR THIS!)

I used apple many years ago when they were persisting with their own processors (G4 or G5, I forget). I hated everything about it. The prices seemed similar so I never gave them another chance. Why would I? M$ has always been there for me like a big snuggly blanket.

Anyway, I'm looking at this a bit lop-sided. Some guy loaned me a few thousand dollars worth of all their latest stuff. Its hard not to like it when you get a free computer, twin monitors, an iPhone, and iPad an apple laptop and a bunch of other things I haven't figured out yet. Basically I feel like I'm having a dirty weekend away from the wife. I love the wife very dearly and would never leave her ... but I am enjoying a good rummage through Apple's knickers.
