I don't use them. So I am doing my bit.

Except facebook. I do have facebook. But I can't see the adverts nor the wall commercials driven by friends (Tom just liked the new Apple 5 - I don't get that anymore) on it and have never given them a penny. I'm one of the millions that they fail to monetise. Their shareholders hate me. I'm just using bandwidth.
I've seen "add Thork" as a friend. Is that you? Or some other Thork that Facebook has found because you may have sent me an e-mail at some point?
Gone.

Use it to keep tabs on who got fat, who had kids and who decided to come out of the closet. My facebook 'friends' will attest I don't have any photos and I don't update my wall.

I just use it for stalking mostly.

>uses social media for the same reason everyone else does
>wants it to go away

No, my parents bothered to give me a real name. My facebook name is not Thork. ::)

I haven't tried to contact you on facebook. Its probably Dann making an account in my name. He's absolutely obsessed with me.

Thork, just by using Facebook, you are increasing their revenue.  Just because you can't see the advertisements, that does not mean they are not charging the advertisers.  Look at the CPM option in the following link.  I am fairly sure that they are still charging for sending you the advertisements, even though you are blocking them.

Do you watch television? The evil news channel is turning you into a product for their advertisers as well.

But that's not the reason you gave for not having a facebook.  That's Thork's reason for not using google.  You quoted someone saying that facebook makes us products for advertisers, which is exactly what television does.

Facebook tracks, analyzes and sells your every action and interaction to advertisers.  In his way, you are the product and the advertisers are the customers.  Television is not nearly this invasive.

Tracking my viewing habits is one thing, but data mining my every action and interaction with all of my FB "friends" is quite another.

Life has a funny way of making me swallow every last dreg of my pride. In a sick twist of fate, I have been offered some ad hoc computer work. As an frickin' iDeveloper making apps.

As we speak, a man is boxing an iPhone, iPad, a mac mini, and the last of my dignity. I get a Mac Pro in a while too.

Now, yeah, I should probably be delighted that all these shiny white things are on their way. But I'm scared. What if I like them? Anyway, despite vehemently refusing ever to buy Apple, here I am about to latch onto one of its teats.

I've no damn idea how to write software for Apple, so I guess that's what I'll be doing for the next few weeks ... learning objective C. Seems like a lot of work for one job but I haven't anything else on. So I guess I better give it a polish and take a bite of Apple. :(

Cue Parsifal, LordDave and Markjo laughing like Hyenas as I unplug my Windows PC and get all appley.

Congratul*tions, at least it's better than nothing. :D

And don't worry, you might like the product at first but you'll probably inevitably grow frustrated with it.

But then you're more than satisfied with Windows, so I dunno...

I'm not laughing because you are now using apple. I'm laughing because unless the app is "hello world" you have no chance of making it in anything less than a year. And that's if it's something simple like a flashlight app.
When they learn that you lied they will flash fry you in the oil of civil court.

What are they having you do anyway?

I don't care about that. A job coding for apple products doesn't mean he likes them. It's a job.

I'm not you. I'll be cranking out apps in 3 weeks. It turns out objective C is very similar to some other languages I've used before. Its just syntax. I learnt vb in a month for a job, and at the time I'd never seen anything like it.

And that's if it's something simple like a flashlight app.
When they learn that you lied they will flash fry you in the oil of civil court.
I didn't need to lie. The guy knows I can't write Objective C (actually couldn't this morning. Can now do basic stuff like loops and calcs and the basics of setting up. ) They are more interested in my Maths and physics skills anyway (don't laugh).

What are they having you do anyway?
Can't say. Its military.

This is kind of my point to Andrew. They want an engineer. Being able to use a computer is just expected.

Soon, Thork will be spewing *nix drivel, like ls and cd.  Next will come the coding part.  He won't get past it if we don't give him a hand.

Why do the brits feel the need to add an 'S' to math.  In the US, math is an umbrella word, it just makes me wonder how the difference got started.

Mathematics is plural, why would the shortened version me singular?
