Parliament! - A forum game
« on: September 11, 2012, 07:06:18 AM »
Roll up, roll up! For a brand new forum game not based on Werewolf!

The Federated Empire of Shenton (FES) is in crisis. Emperor Rowbotham III died, leaving no heir to the throne and now the Empire threatens to crumble into chaos and civil war.

An emergency council is called in the nation's capital involving the barons from the various provinces across the empire. A decision is made to run the empire under a small parliament until a new emperor can be found to reunite the provinces. Immediately the squabbling began. Who would stand on this new parliament, what new powers would they wield?

Eventually Speaker Chris Spaghetti stood in the hall of castle Shenton and made his voice heard:

~

All right, in this game, the aim is not to track down marauding werewolves or secret aliens but to claim power over the Federated Empire of Shenton. Each of the players will be a baron hoping to get themselves elected onto the parliament and each will represent one of three political parties. The aim of the game is to make your party the majority in parliament and take control of the Empire.

The game will be split into two 24 hour periods: Election and Legislation

During the Election period, the barons have to elect one of their number onto the Parliament. During Legislation, the parliament votes to give or take away powers to the special players in the game (more below)

~The Players~

Speaker - Plays the part of the Oracle

Barons

- Every player (except the Speaker) begins as a Baron, they cannot vote during legislation but can vote to elect someone other than themselves to parliament. They will be randomly assigned to one of three parties:
-Liberals
-Communists
-Conservatives
-*Independent

A baron wins if their party becomes the overall majority.
NOTE: IT IS AGAINST THE RULES TO PUBLICLY REVEAL YOUR PARTY!

*Independent - Only introduced if the game mechanics require it. The independent may be allowed to form a coalition with 2 weaker parties or any of the 3. Unlike other barons, the independent must be elected to be considered a winner.

MP

- An MP is a baron who serves on the parliament. During the 'legislation' period they can vote to:
-Allow/ban the press
-Arrest a baron (prevents a baron from voting for 1 turn)
-Knight/demote a baron
-Spy on a baron

Knight

- a baron with 2 votes in the election period. Is appointed by parliament or demoted back to being a normal baron again.

Press

 - The press serves the role of the psychic except that their identity is known to all. During the Legislation period they can send the Speaker a PM and ask for information on  any player. It is up to the press if they release the information - remember, the press can lie. The press can also be arrested.

Spy

- A spy is appointed by parliament secretly (if they vote to appoint a spy then the MPs have to send the speaker a PM saying who) the spy sends a pm asking about any baron, the information is not sent back to the spy but every MP

~Sign-up sheet~

The Barons of the (20) provinces of FES:

Baron Pseudonym of the County of Dussex
Baron Von Thork of the Barony of Westwodeland
Baron de Supertails of the Province of Merika
Lord Wilmore, baron of Wilmore County
Baron Parsifal of Unixshire
Baron Franklin of Marychester
Baron von Pongo of the Isle of Silly
Colonel Gaydafi of the Free Barony of Finndon
Lord Dave, baron of Blokechester
Baron Hussein of the Rotton Borough of Saddamshire
Baron Wakka of Wakka
Baron von Vindictus of Vevoria
Baron Datsall of the County of Folkston
Baron Enigma of Myst
Baron Particle of Personham
Baron Irush of SCoViSham
Baron Verrine of Vale Island
Baron Dann of Lynch County
Baron Roundy of Truthineschester
Baron Beorn of Agencourt

Is anyone else interested in trying this one out?

In. Now to actually go back and read the fine print I signed on for.

Edit; it seems ok on the surface. Even if there are issues, maybe later down the track, at least this will be fun doing something different.

You seem to have taken a lot of time making your OP so I'm in. I also have confidence in your story telling ability. I better not be a snivelling Liberal though! >:(

I think I'll give this a try. Probably won't be very good though, so I feel bad for whoever's in the same party.

Sounds good. A little complicated, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm in.

The press can also be arrested.

If the press is arrested, does that mean she cannot release any information she may be given?
I'm going to side with the white supremacists.

I like it, my only fear is people will hint at their political parties and make it rather easy. For example: "I propose we vote everyone to be a knight because EVERYONE SHOULD BE EQUAL tehehehehe I'm so clever now all the other communists will know who I am."

But, for the record, I'm in.

Don't liberals preach equality too? Communism is more about state ownership.

I think the mechanics will probably be a little wonky on the first try, but I really like the theme and basic structure, so I think we should give it a go.

You're wrong, but this isn't the thread to discuss it. Regardless, that was just a rhetorical example. I'm sure the clever minds of FES can find better ways to hint at their political orientation.

But I agree with Wilmore.

the press cannot send a PM while arrested, so they get no information to release.

I know it's basically impossible to stop people hinting at their party but as with werewolves and psychics in other games I have to trust people will stick to the spirit of the game and keep it a secret.

Just one problem to iron out in a brand-new game. Another is, that I think parliament may have too much power if one party starts to get ahead of the others but I thought, try it as it is for the moment before complicating it more than it needs to be.

In FES, the title of 'Baron' is one without gender. On may be a female baron much as one can be a female actor.

Also, good!

@Spaghetti

Dann is nursing a forum game that no one wants to play. You are going to have to tell him that your game has ruined his game.

I think we need to clarify how elections work.

My original impression was that people would know who else is in their party, but not who was in the other parties. Is this accurate?

What happens if a baron votes for a baron from another party? Is that a valid vote?

How many seats are there in the Parliament? What happens when they all get filled?

Unfortunately I can't say precisely how elections will work until I know how many players there are.

But this was my plan (assuming 15 players for now)

the 15 players are split 5 each for the Libs, Tories and Commies*

The parliament will be 10, with the winner either being the first to get all 5 into parliament or having 4 whilst the others have 3 each

Nobody knows who anybody else stands for at the start until they're revealed either by spies or the press.

Sorry it's slightly complicated but it was the best way I could think of stopping 1 party from dominating the other in a 2 part system - this will (hopefully) make things closer.

*(If there aren't a precise number of players, say there are 14, then I thought I can either have it as slightly unfair or have one player represent a party who will only form a coalition with the 2 weaker parties.

For instance if there are 14 players then the Conservatives have 5, the libs and comms both have 4 plus an 'independent who can only ally with either the libs and comms

if there are 13 then each party gets 4 plus an independent who can stand for any of the 3

What do you think? Unfair game or add independents?)

Add independents rather than an unfair game

And I'm in

And I hope Thork is a Liberal

Ya, I've just been looking at the possible combinations with 13 players and if there are 4 to each party, plus an independent

then in the 10-member parliament, the only combination in which the independent will affect the game is in an unlikely 3-3-3-1 split, in which case we just vote for an eleventh member to break the gridlock.

The independent has the advantage that if they are elected to parliament they are a winner but the disadvantage that unlike a party-player they have to get elected to win.

Can MPs be demoted back to barons and replaced?
If not, won't the game be over in 10 rounds? (20 days)
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.
