Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)
« on: August 24, 2012, 11:28:06 PM »
This is a thread about ASMR which is reported my many including myself, starting as early as my youth. It's basically the science behind "tingles" in the brain. Some report Bob Ross as being a trigger, simply because of the slow pacing of his actions and his past popularity on Television, with a painting show.

One does not simply use the science on Bob Ross.

Then what about this one... this one gave me ASMR like crazy...

#" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Le Mystere des voix Bulgares - Bulgarian choir 3 songs

One is flat earth and the other is more like round earth. I am curious if there is any proof that either one is better than the other, or perhaps one is the devils music?

Elvis vs the Beach Boys.

So if we take the choir ASMR, it clearly "sooths the savage beast", and this sort of thing has been known forever.

The Bob Ross is a new phenomenon beginning with a painting show and it does indeed sooth those who watch it.

I am just curious if it's basically a repeat in history as far as the "Devil's Music" goes. There wasn't much science regarding the Devils music in the 60s with psychedelic rock which encouraged youth to head out to rural areas in droves, have sex and smoke marijuana. This Boss Ross phenomenon has the potential to grind the economy to a halt with the sheer pleasure it provides those who experience ASMR.

I am not in favor for either, or against either. The science is secondary, and the social economics are more important regarding the science of sound and it's influence on humans.

If you ask me, it's already in widespread use by major movie corporations.

Hey, I always wondered what that feeling was. There doesn't seem to be much science on it.

Just listen. If you don't get a sort of fuzzy feeling, then your brain doesn't work.

It feels like your brain is having an orgasm. I know I get it when I have haircuts. It's a very nice feeling, especially when it's really strong.

So you tell people that they will feel tingles if they watch a particular video, and sure enough, they report that they feel tingles when they watch that video.  That's some great science there, Internet.

Isn't the internet known for being full of bright, intelligent people that aren't easily swayed into thinking things because people tell them to? :P

Certain people's voices will cause it, but it can be a wide range of things. It is even the primary reason I watched Bob Ross videos on PBS when I was a kid. Basically if you don't know what it is then I suppose it doesn't happen to you, but saying it exists simply because "other people have said it does" is ignorant.

I'm not calling your bluff or anything, I just suspect that suggestion may account for a lot of the people who claim to feel this.

I don't doubt that suggestion plays a role in it, but it does happen when no suggestion is involved. For example, the video I posted, no one gave me that video and said "woah, man, doesn't that voice give you this fuzzy feeling?" It is simply a video in which I remembered a similar feeling to what is described in the OP.

If it helps your poor ego, I was joking. I do not actually think you had a Bob Ross fetish. I didn't even watch the videos nor was I supposing said feeling doesn't exist. :)

Maybe, but I've had this feeling for the longest time and never had any idea what it was. Apparently, science doesn't either.

Okay, well I'll just add that vitamins seem to enchance it. Specifically ones that are good for blood circulation. Cutting out grease seems to help as well. Same with sugar, ect...

The other day, I was able to put headphones over my temples and I could feel the tingles like crazy. I couldn't hear the sound at all. It's like I could feel the soundwaves or magnetism interacting with my brain.

Does that help? In any event, it doesn't seem to be autonomous. Or perhaps it is as it might be unique to each individual. Not sure how autonomy plays a role in it.

Certain videos are just better at triggering it, but once it gets going, I noticed I could get nearly every video to trigger it.

The really crazy part about it, which might add some credence to chakra religions, is that I can get the ASMR response in different areas of my body all things depending. Without knowing a single thing about chakras, and reading up on it, the ASMR "vibrations/tingles/chills" seem to correlate with descriptions of chakras.

Others have already described it in more simple terms than I, but I still feel that description is pretty good if you imagine it.
