Regarding Pink Floyd, what moron recommended Animals as an intro to Pink Floyd?  It's not completely worthless, but it's definitely one of their weaker albums.  You don't want to start with that one.

It's a better starting point than The Wall or anything after that. As a general rule, Pink Floyd albums dropped off consistently in quality after Meddle (with the exception of Obscured By Clouds, which is inferior to The Dark Side of the Moon).

I attribute this in large part to Roger Waters taking over, and then later even moreso to Roger Waters not being present. What made post-Barrett Pink Floyd work so well was the interplay between band members; remove a member or have one be overly controlling, and you don't have Pink Floyd anymore.

^ Shall do! :)

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours: My Lord. If I'd told myself a year or two ago that I'd be loving so much older rock, I'd've laughed. I always had this idea that, with a few exceptions, it was mostly boring and sounded incredibly dated and just could not compare sound-wise to newer stuff (not necessarily because of quality, just because I'm younger). But between groups like The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival (God I love CCR now) and now Fleetwood Mac, it's blown me away. There are one or two songs on this album that didn't completely enchant me, but everything else did to a huge extent. I knew from the first minute of the first song that I was going to love it. I also had an "oooooh! Childhood song omgomg" moment with "Go Your Own Way", the artist of which I had never known until now. It's also the only album I can think of where I actively thought "wow, I really love the drumming on this". Anyway, yes, this was just a brilliant album. I might just have to check out more Fleetwood Mac. :D

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I See a Darkness: Well, I gotta say, despite all the acclaim...I didn't think this was all that great. The only two songs I enjoyed a lot were "I See a Darkness" and "Madeleine-Mary", really. Others were either nicely-written or composed, but never really came together for me. You'd think it'd strike me somewhere deep, since the album as a whole sounds like it's about depression and I fight a losing battle with that myself so I often love songs that deal with that sort of thing, but it really just didn't resonate with me much at all. I'm not sure what exactly made it not right for me. The lyrics were generally good, his voice was pretty good, the instrumentals were nice...but I dunno, I was, to put it bluntly, pretty bored. I don't like saying bad things and I feel bad, but yeah. Sorry. :[

Rumours is even better when you learn of the background and what the artists were going through at the time. It gives it a lot more meaning.

deadmau5 - > album title goes here <: I've never been a huge deadmau5 fan and this album didn't really change much. There were some good tracks on it, but for the most part it was kinda average and repetitive house music. The best ones were ones where he either supported a vocalist or he made tracks that actually changed, evolved and sounded interesting. Ones like Superliminal, Channel 42 and Sleepless. The great vocal ones were The Veldt (feat. Chris James, a random Twitter fan), Telemiscommunications (feat. Imogen Heap) and Professional Griefers (feat. Gerard Way), my personal favourite. He really made music to fit the vocal style there and it was great. The Veldt is gorgeous, though.

I'm amazed you even bothered to listen to an album that has such a retarded title and artist name.

This from the distinguished composer of Jeepers Creepers Jumbo.

^ I was actually meaning to look for that before! I am going to need to find some way to convert them from .ogg, though, as I don't believe iPods support the format and, despite particularly proselytizing protests, I do not have the resources to go out and buy some open device on a whim. :[

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon: On a song-by-song basis, this album was variously good and alright. There were only a couple of really good moments. The writing felt way too vague for the emotional depth she was trying to convey, and really overall the whole album felt vague and kind of nebulous...so impersonal. Which could be fine on its own, but she wanted to make a more personal album, which is even evident in the songs' subjects. It doesn't feel...like anything specific, really, just a collection of songs. That's where it fails. Not to mention she really seemed out of her depth, like she was overreaching and trying to make a really artistic statement but it feels amateur coming from her. Since it's only her second album, that's not much of a surprise. My favourite tracks were Anything Could Happen, I Know You Care and...Figure 8, I guess. Or Hanging On. I don't know.

Update to this: I just listened to the album again after having lost the tracks for a while and never bothering to get them again when I got a new iPod. It's amazing how much your perspective can broaden in five months. It kinda bored me before, but this time I really enjoyed it. I dunno if it was the circumstances when I heard it (I remember not being in a particularly good mood at the time and bitching about stuff), but I'm glad I relistened, because it was much nicer. I'd have to change my favourites to "Anything Could Happen", "Only You", "Joy", "Hanging On", and "Explosions".

Dr. Awkward - Boy Without a Fairy: This album is offered on Dr. Awkward's website at a name-your-own-price deal, which is awesome. It may not appeal to anyone else (it's a rap album/EP using remixed instrumentals from Ocarina of Time to basically tell its narrative and poke a little fun at points), but I obviously had to get it. Overall, it wasn't bad, but I'm a massive Zelda nerd so...yeah. It's painfully cheesy at times (the title track comes to mind), but the remixed instrumentals and tracks like "Formulaic" that aren't afraid to riff on the game(s) made it worth it. It clocks in barely at 20 minutes, so it was good fun. :P

aivi & surasshu - The Black Box: This is another name-your-price album I got. This one's a little more interesting, because Aivi and Surasshu are each two very different artists. Aivi is a very talented pianist, while Surasshu is a chiptune musician. Why they decided to do an album together I don't know, but the result is surprisingly beautiful. They make the sounds work together rather than clash, and while they didn't utilize the differences in as interesting ways as I would've liked, the end result was still a very nice piece of work. It seemed to be more Aivi than Surasshu. Which I'm alright with—I absolutely adore piano—but I was hoping for a more 50/50 split. Ah well, either way, it was fantastic. :]

^ Got it! Any specific one you can recommend above others? Otherwise I'll figure out which one to check out on my own. :P

Daft Punk - Musique, Vol. 1: 1993-2005: I know the FES' general thoughts about greatest hits albums, but forgive me for this one. I asked a Daft Punk fan which album I should check out, and they gave this one, saying the albums on their own are made up of several goods tracks and much boredom, and that this compiled the best of them into one and would give the best overall experience. It's worth noting that my only experience with Daft Punk was "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", "Technologic" and "Robot Rock". My impressions after the first track weren't that great, it was pretty one-note and mediocre, but from there on it got a lot better. If there's one thing I've noticed big time, though, it's that their songs are incredibly repetitive. I make fun of deadmau5 a lot for being repetitive, but these guys are just as guilty as him. The difference is that Daft Punk has a bunch of layers to their songs, new sounds and vocal effects and all-around screwing with the sound happening throughout the tracks to keep them from growing too tiring. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't have liked this as much as I did. I can't say for sure if I'd like to just sit down and listen to this, but much of it is definitely nice to have on while doing something else as well. Favourites would have to be "Da Funk", "Alive", "Rollin' & Scratchin'" and the three I've heard. "Rollin' & Scratchin'" is my favourite by a long shot.

Alright, will do then. :P

Listened to these yesterday, but lost internet during, so here they are now:

Avalanche City - Our New Life Above the Ground: Okay, wow, this album is exactly what I've been looking for in a folk album. It's dreamy, sweet, sentimental and poetic, but not so up itself that you have to spend hours interpreting what every single line means. I love how "You and I" is just pure, unbridled love that isn't afraid of being lovey-dovey and cheesy. It's so sweet. "Ends in the Ocean" is just delightfully dreamy. "The Silence" sums up feelings of insecurity and worry that you'll never live up to a societal expectation that I know very well. Really, it sounds just like the quaint cover made me feel. I already know that this is going to be getting a lot of plays from me, it's just wonderful. I hope Avalanche City has more albums, because I am going to devour them quite readily. I may even have to buy this one on CD. I don't know that I can really pick favourites, but the ones that stuck out to me were "You and I", "Love Don't Leave", "Ends in the Ocean" and "The Silence". Which isn't to say the rest aren't equally good, just that those are the ones that really stuck out at the moment. :]

Justice - †: This is another one I’ve kind of been excitedly awaiting but never really got around to. I’ve been devoid of good electronica lately, too much of what I’ve been finding is simple, one-note stuff that tends to be the same few segments repeated a set amount of times, with that same annoying beat…beat…beat…beat…beat beat beat beat beatbeatbeatDROP setup. So I’m glad this ended up being as good as I’d hoped. It’s kinda heavy electronica, not exactly light on the harsh sounds, but it’s not on the level of “filthy” dubstep. That being said, I love those sorts of noises used well, and they definitely are used well here. There were a couple of missteps (e.g. “D.A.N.C.E.” and “DVNO (feat. Mehdi Pinson”), but it’s overall just a really awesome electronica/dance album. My favourite tracks are “Let There Be Light”, “Valentine”, “Stress”, “Waters of Nazareth” and “Minutes to Midnight”.

Avalanche City
folk album.
hmm
In Supes' defence, "folk" is an incredibly vague term, it could mean anything from the vernacular and traditional musics of different cultures to Bob Dylan's off-key caterwauling, but upon listening to approximately 20 seconds of an Avalanche City song (sorry, that's all I could stand) I have determined that it is not very folkish in any sense of the word.

I don't even know, I hate genre terms, they're stupid and broad and cross over too much. Wikipedia and a million other sites said they're folk and the album is folk/indie folk so I said they're folk, and they sound like other things Wikipedia and others have said is folk or indie folk or contemporary folk or folk rock or something leave me alone, folk off

I have a dislike for genre terms too. Some really good music defies being tied to just 1 genre, or instead they actually make a new genre.

That's exactly the problem. Genre (along with pretty much any categorisation system applied in a social context) gives people an entitlement complex; first they expect everything to fit in to relatively neat categories, then when something new comes along and no one knows what the fuck it is, it faces considerable difficulty in getting heard because the majority of people expect to know what something is before they listen to it, rather than growing a pair and finding out what it is by listening to it.

^ I can definitely agree with that. Even I have the problem of expecting something and being a little thrown off when it doesn't fit the sound I expected. It's a nasty habit that I don't know if one can kick without somehow going in completely and absolutely blind, but one upside to listening to whole albums is that usually the "well this isn't what I thought..." wears off after a couple tracks. That said, I was listening to Dog Problems by The Format the other day and didn't enjoy it as much as I probably would have otherwise because I was expecting it to sound like fun., since it was Nate Ruess' (the lead singer of both) band before they disbanded and he formed fun. That ends up making me feel let down for a stupid reason whenever I find something expecting one thing when it ends up being another. :[

One other thing that sucks about genres is that people will shoehorn themselves into certain genres and not like anything outside of them, judging it before they've heard it and lumping other artists in that genre in with the ones they don't like, thus assuming they won't like them simply because of their genre.
