"Amérique/América" is the Spanish ,French and Portugalian words for the American Continent. As almost every country in America except you talks in one of these languages, I think is not so "Irrelevant". I don´t call myself "Hispanic" (In the geographical, not racial sense, as I´m Caucasic), as Portugalians , Andorre people and some Britanic are too. I call myself "Spanish". If you want to know, spanish word for Yankee/American is "Estadounidense" (Unitedstatian) or "Norteamericano" (Northamerican, even if this one is not corrrect)

Of course, more than half are South American. But it is because I have generalized the Caribbean. There are a few more American countries in the Caribbean.

He's making a distinction between "American" and "South American", which is about as useless as the distinction made in the OP. The U.S.A. has a terribly clumsy name, so there's no easy alternative for "American".
