Thork,

Since you've only done the banner, I'll just say what I think about that.  The theme as a whole I'm not extremely fond of, but I'll wait til you are done.

The gradient to white is a bit odd.  That looks like it might be the parent theme though.
I like the concept and choice of graphics, but it currently looks cluttered and without order.
Title and Time are both hard to read

Steve,

Thanks a ton, we really appreciate it.

Everyone else,

If you have no idea about css/html feel free to design just a mockup (and supply me with appropriate files to edit when the time comes).  I'll do the legwork if it wins or is going to be featured to make it into a full theme.
The illusion is shattered if we ask what goes on behind the scenes.

I had only done the banner and background. ??? I want to move the time and do a proper logo when I have time + there won't be balloon etc. That's all from the original. I will likely remove the quick search bar too, because it just encourages people to not use the filters and search the whole damn forum.

Oh well, whilst not brimming with confidence now, I'll plug on. :-\

Thanks for doing this Steve, I'm sure anyone designing a theme will appreciate it.
Steve,

Thanks a ton, we really appreciate it.

No problem. I'm happy to help, and it was fun to set up anyway.

So far, Thork is the only person to upload a theme. Feel free to PM me for login details if you're interested in entering; I promise I won't bite! :)

I will add, its really easy. There are enough people here to offer support just in case anyway. If you have some free time and feel creative, give it a go.

I like it, Thork, but I'd make the blue background much more pale.  The vibrant blue you've got draws a lot of attention to itself when it has absolutely no reason to.  The eye should be drawn towards the content, not away from it.

Here's my thoughts on the theme itself, not your changes.  I hope they prove useful to you.  I am not trying to knock your design or anything, just give you useful constructive criticism and some areas I see right off that might be easy to change and should increase your design usability a ton.

That blue is odd.  On some monitors it may appear more purple than you'd intend.  I need to colour callibrate my new monitor soon. I'll let you know when I do and how it looks.
I like it, Thork, but I'd make the blue background much more pale.  The vibrant blue you've got draws a lot of attention to itself when it has absolutely no reason to.  The eye should be drawn towards the content, not away from it.
This seems like a reasonable idea.  Our current site has that heavy dark matte that the site sits in.  This, to me, creates a weird effect where you are both drawn to the content while at the same time drawn to the borders of the site.  The issue is worse on larger monitors.  A paler colour would do wonders.  Or even an appropriate background texture, image, etc.

The white gradients look weird with it as well, especially when it fades to white on the borders of content areas.  This serves no purpose design or functionality wise and looks out of place.

The dotted background images make the text harder to read.

The header image overlaps the weird white gradient while also leaving a jagged edge at the edges (not accounting for the curved corners I imagine)

Text for date is hard to read.

The font on the logo seems a little too ornate for this.  In addition some of the tweening / spacing / sizing on it needs to be manually adjusted.  It appears to be a display or graphical font as well.  Its feeling also imo doesn't really represent the society.

Navigation bar is too tall for the text displayed in it.

Search area has different margins on the search input than on the submit button.  Perhaps a taller input?  Also it is, like the news (listed next) almost flush with the top of that div.  Perhaps it would make more sense anyways in the nav bar.

News has no margin or padding to move it away from the top of its containing div.  That whole area (and most areas) should have a unified or at least sensible scheme for padding and margin.  It also appears to have different left and right margins / padding than the rest of that area.

It looks like you used a png  for the header.  I'd suggest using a jpeg with the appropriate color as a background instead.  This saves download time and bandwidth as well as a few display issues on older browsers.

User information in the top left seems to be a different colour scheme and also in general just looks a bit out of place and style.

Border radius on the main content area differs from those areas contained within it.  This, like most of these notes, are minor but when put together cause a real strain on the design and eye.

Balloons.

Remove white around logo

Many of these things have been adjusted already. I have moar improvements to go. It'll be another week before I return to finish it off. I probably shouldn't have posted incremental changes but nevermind.

Also, I look forward to seeing other people's efforts. I haven't seen anyone else paste anything yet.

I really like the banner Thork, but like John and Nomad I am not a big fan of the overall colour scheme. A pale blue would do your theme a lot more justice, in my opinion.  I'm not big on the font for 'The Flat Earth Society' either. Something a bit more... subtle would be good. Oh, and no baloons methinks.

I too would like to see what (if anything) other members have done. Has anyone else even done a mock-up as John suggested?

huff. The logo was purely because I haven't decided how to incorporate the child's logo we have in yet.

The balloons will be gone. They are going to be replaced with social media buttons linking the forum to facebook, daniel's twitter and the FES wiki. I already made the buttons but I'll just add them before I show you. Instead of cycling the balloons it can cycle messages such as " us on facebook" or "Follow our leader on twitter." "check out our wiki" "join the society" or words to that effect. There is an option to turn the prompts off if they are annoying.

The search bar has already gone - same as current theme. The banner no longer has abrupt edges, the black text on the dotted headers is now white everywhere, the top menu font will be getting enlarged + I have a few other ideas.

The theme ... is not finished. There will be no moar updates. I'll just show you next when its finished. Be in about 2 weeks as this week is a write off for me.

Might I suggest leaving out the balloons?

Also, I think someone should mention that those balloons don't look very good.

HEY THORK SEEMS I'M THE ONLY ONE TO TELL YOU GET RID OF THOSE BALLOONS

I kind of like the idea for the social networking stuff, but could you also include a version without them?  I'm a less is more kind of guy, and since I'm already connected to FES on facebook I don't still need FES constantly telling me to.

I rather like the banner, but am surprised noone has complained about the balloons previously.

I'd try, I'm just not sure I would even know where to start. I've always designed my own avvys, signatures, wallpapers, and Chrome Themes though, so I might have a tiny bit to offer.

I made an effort but everyone bitched they didn't like the colour scheme and this bit and that bit and I just gave up. I assumed no one was interested in it because everyone hated it.

It appears my theme sandbox is broken somehow. One moment, fixing.

Edit: Fixed. During my Linode migration to LVM, I accidentally nuked extended filesystem ACLs, resulting in the web server having no permission to read the site content. My bad. :(
