One of my USB ports just kicked the bucket
« on: July 23, 2011, 05:52:27 PM »
A few minutes ago, I suddenly lost all responsiveness in my optical USB mouse. Turning it over, the LED on the bottom had gone out. My USB keyboard was still operational, so it couldn't have been the computer.

After connecting the mouse to a different USB port, it started working again. I tried connecting the keyboard to the port the mouse had been in, to confirm that's where the problem was, and it did indeed stop working.

Has anyone experienced sudden and complete loss of functionality in one USB port before? This is two ports of six that I've lost since purchasing this computer, the first being after I tried to force a USB device in the wrong way ages back.

I bought a brand new Dell laptop whose USB ports have never worked.

I have.
I've seen them die due to the capacitors that feed them dying. (ie. exploding)
Open up your PC and check to make sure all your capacitors are fine.

Could be the mouse, I have a mouse that just doesn't work right with all ports and sometimes you need to unplug it and move to another port to get it working again.

I now have a couple of USB mouses dead and each time it was because of the mouse, not the computer.
I saw a slight haze in the hotel bathroom this morning after I took a shower, have I discovered a new planet?

So wait why aren't you use the Leemote?

And USB ports fail if you abuse them. If you were bothered you could try resolder them but you know... meh.

One of your ports could be USB 1.0.

I don't see the relevance.

USB ports have wires and electricity. Like all such things, they sometimes break. You might be able to solder them back together if you care enough.

I forgot this broke, and I've been using that USB port just fine for the past three months, so it must have gotten fixed somehow. I don't remember which one broke, but I know I've been using it because I'm using all four of the USB ports at the back.

How can a USB port kick a bucket? It doesn't have legs.

My USBs randomly stop working sometimes, but I think it's a Windows issue so it probably isn't relevant.

One of the USB ports on the front of my machine is non-functional as well.  Not sure what happened with it, just stopped working one day.  I might try switching it to a different USB root on my mobo and see if that changes anything, but haven't really had the need to try.
