Yes, JPG is generally better for photographs rather than B/W documents.  Dropping the documents to GIFs using 4 colours has reduced the size drastically.  The only problem I'm running into now is that when I put them files into a PDF, the size increases quite a bit.  For example, I have a 14-page pamphlet which totaly about 800k as a series of GIFs.  When I make a PDF out of those same files, the size increases to 2.2megs.  Does the PDF format automatically re-encode images with a less efficient method than GIFs?

Since GIF was a proprietary format for a long time, there probably is some conversion to a JPEG2000 based format.  Does your scanning software have the option to save directly as a PDF without having to go through an intermediate format?  Most modern copiers will let you scan and save multi-page PDFs directly so I would think that most other scanning software should be able to as well.  If not, you might want to try scanning and saving as a b/w TIFF and then converting to PDF.

Initially, I was just using OSX's built-in scanner/preview software.  It works well enough but the filesize isn't great.  I tried Acrobat and that wasn't much better.  It's either massive files of good quality or small files where it's unreadable.  The best luck I've had so far has been running it through PrimoPDF.  It's not great but seems to be the best option of the ones I've seen.  It's still nowhere near as good as I was hoping, though.  I've downloaded PDF books based on scans before and some were like 10megs for 200 pages while retaining pretty decent quality.  As it is, the best I've done is 2megs for 15 pages.  Not terrible but not great either.

Edit: Actually, never mind.  I've got a system in place now and it works really well.  Smallish sizes, decent quality.  I've already scanned two booklets.  More to come!

Actually, scratch that.  I have tons of issues.  I just found a bound book which includes lots and lots of The Earth issues including the one Tom mentioned.  Unfortunately, that page only includes a written description of the experiment instead of a photo.  However.. in a different book, I did find the photo!  It's part of a larger pamphlet that I don't have time to scan right now before bed, but I've scanned the photo itself.  As far as I know, this is a first.  I've never seen that photo anywhere else..

The fact that a single issue of The Earth Not a Globe Review could reach almost 400 pages in length illustrates how serious the early Flat Earth Society was.

And it was allegedly a monthly journal...

I've discovered that there is also hotlinking "protection" on the site's theme images, so that when viewed without sending the (again, optional) HTTP Referer header, the FES homepage looks completely broken:



Once again, for the sake of your users who are unable to access the PDFs in the library or even browse the site normally, and because it doesn't provide any actual protection (as demonstrated in my previous post, which you ignored), I request that you remove this hotlinking "protection".

Update: I have written a script that will automatically update my mirror of the Flat Earth Library every hour, on the hour. It won't download files it already has, so you don't need to worry about bandwidth exhaustion as a result of this.

However, if you do have any objections to this, please contact me.

I've put another copy of The Earth online.  It's issues 49-50 and includes the photos of Blount's Bedford Level Experiment as well as a very cool illustration of an airship of some sort.

I still can"t read them, Parsifal. I think it"s because i need to download a PDF reader. When i click on the links i get a box that says "what should firefox do with this file? open with or saue file."

If i download a PDF reader, will i be able to read them?
