Because the constitution said that the president get's to put them in.
Then congress has to approve.
Gone.

We already have enough politicians who answer to popular demand through elections.  Having appointed justices allows them to weigh the law fairly and make unpopular decisions, if necessary.

Exactly. The job of the judicial branch is not to answer to the people, but to answer to the law. Voting for them defeats that purpose.

Of course, that doesn't stop the majority of states from just electing their judges anyway.

But does the judges being appointed lead to biased decisions? But either way, it's better than elections. Judges would end up wanting to please the people and not uphold the law.

Sort of.
The party in power usually chooses judges who are likely to rule in their favor.  However, the judge is there long after the party loses power and there are more than one.
Gone.

Brother Verrine, I have posted dossiers in the super secret forum. 2 dossiers on Supreme Court judges, and 2 on other lawyers. Any of these counselors will be most helpful to you, they cannot work pro bono but the charges will be minimal.

SCOTUS judges have life tenure once they are appointed,  this is meant to keep that branch of government apolitical.  They would be better able to make unpopular decisions based on the law instead of popular demand, unlike the other two branches.  Are they apolitical?  Of course not, especially in recent years.  However I still think they are much better able to make hard decisions than either of the other branches given their tenure.  If we think it is bad now, electing SCOTUS judges would make it much worse.
