Objective versus Subjective - Meaning of Life
« on: November 19, 2011, 01:37:49 AM »
Here at college, it seems lots of people are now making depressing realizations. I'm finding myself playing therapist, a role which I probably suck at because it is also deeply rooted in emotions.

A friend told me that everything is hopeless because there is no meaning to anything. [/jist of it]

I contend that things can't be "hopeless" without meaning, because hope (or lack thereof), places meaning in the result. It is inherent.

Either:
- Nothing matters AND nothing mattering also doesn't matter.
Or:
- Things matter.

If you include "human-assigned-meaning" into an objective problem you confirm its equal validity. That is, subjective meaning is every bit as valid as objective meaning to that person. Ironic fix, huh? ;)

If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

Summary:
There is no meaning of life because it's meaningless from a universal standpoint.
Therefore you are free to make up whatever meaning you want. So go nuts and find your own meaning.
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

I am a terrible person and I am a typical Blowhard Liberal for being wrong about Bom.

Does "objectivity" exist? What does it mean for something to be "objective"? How do you show that something is "objective"?

Objective means that it is an object (physical or otherwise), definitive as that object and only that object. For example, my do is a dog no matter who  or what observes it, therefore its classification as a dog is objective.

Not true. I can classify it as a wolf, because most dogs can breed with wolves and are therefore technically the same species.

Why is it depressing to realise that you're free to find you own meanings, to make life worth living for you, rather than being forced into a role imposed on you by another power?

Life is as meaningful as you make it. The only meaningless life is a life spent waiting for someone to give it meaning.

How do you know it manifests itself as a dog to other people? How do you know other people can see it at all? How do you know it exists? For that matter, how do you know you exist?

What we call "objectivity" is merely the subjective judgments we are least uncertain of.

Fair enough. essentially, we have concluded that what constitutes objective is subjective. Well done, chaps.

I came to the depressing realization at college my smoothie isn't smooth.

Heres some pics to show it happened(in b4 pics or it didn't happen):

Vongeo is a wanker, he wears a wanker hat; he always smells like urine and he thinks the Earth is flat.

Who said anything about importance? Dedicate your life to your family or making the world better or learning as much as you can, finding happiness, finding inner peace, becoming successful, creating art, whatever it is that gives your life meaning and worth, just don't waste your life waiting for someone else to impose a meaning on you.

Believing what you're doing is significant only makes it significant to yourself. I suppose it's better and will lead to happier life than "life has no meaning so I'll just do nothing," but it actually doesn't make your life or existence meaningful.

People that demand meaning from life are doomed to be miserable. Why does it matter if life has a meaning? If you are doing exactly what you want to be doing then why do you care what you're supposed to be doing?

I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free.
