I appreciate that.  I don't know if there's any process or screening with the mods that get posted on that website, but I'm usually a bit wary of downloading homemade stuff that strangers on the Internet provide.

I've never heard of anybody including malicious software with a mod, or anything like that. If that did happen they would be discovered almost immediately, and a site as well run as the Nexus would remove the file. The Nexus and Planet Elder Scrolls are the two best and largest sites for Elder Scrolls mods. I recommend starting with the most downloaded mods of all time, which I've conveniently linked to, instead of trying to trawl through all of the new content.

To make it arguably easier you can probably just use The Nexus's Mod Manager for Morrowind and it should do all the mod installation for you.  It works with all the other similar engine games from bethesda as well (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas).

The Data Files folder is where you'll dump most mod files (it's located at Steam/steamapps/common/Morrowind/DataFiles by default). Most mods come in a package with folders named "textures", "meshes", "sounds". etc. It depends on what the mod adds or changes. It will also usually include an .esp file. All of those things need to be put into Data Files. You'll be asked if you want to merge folders, and the answer is always a hearty yes. That's really all you have to do for basic mods. I've never tried any mod managers.

Yeah Morrowind is super easy to add mods for, the mod managers aren't really necessary.  A third party launcher is probably a good idea though, if you end up with a lot of mods because the game's launcher doesn't let you set mod priority.  That Nexus Mod Manager has one built in and is basically the same thing as the stand alone ESP/ESM manager that you'd use otherwise.

Protip: Don't get any gameplay changing mods on your first playthrough.

In fact, I would just advise you to get MGE and roll with it.

Really this, except I still suggest Better Heads and Better Bodies as well at least.

I got distracted and installed Skywind, which is really cool, even in its very unfinished state. People are porting the world and assets from Morrowind to the Skyrim engine, basically. Screenshots are still incoming.

Unless you've literally been taking screenshots ever since you got home, you are still a filthy liar. Maybe not filthy, but a liar nonetheless.

So do I just drag the folder that contains the mod into the Data Files folder?  I tried that and it didn't seem to work.

The .esm/.esp or whatever needs to be directly in the Data folder. Not in it's own subfolder.
Also, most mods comes with instructions on how to install them. Check for a readme or something.

Okay, now I've got it.  Great.  But why do the mods come with all these folders if the .esm/.esp file is all I need to add?

You need to put all of those other folders into the Data Files folder as well.

The .esm is the mod file, while the folders usually contain stuff like sounds, textures, meshes and stuff like that as well as other kinds of data which the mod uses.

ITT: Saddam cannot into computars

The actual data of the mod is in those other folders. The .esp just determines how that data is used, changes values, executes scripts etc. It's like an .exe file, but you know, in TES.

View of Vivec from the pier. One of the coolest cities in fiction.

"Why walk, when you can ride?"

MGE has some beautiful water shaders.

I keep my view distance low to preserve the foggy and mysterious atmosphere of the unmodded game.

Solstheim. Skyrim's latest expansion takes place here.

Vivec is probably one of the coolest looking cities I've seen in a game, but is also the most fucking irritating and confusing to get around in.
