It wasn't the whole empire fighting.  The Thalmor attacked Hammerfell and Cyrodil, and the Empire gave up after Cyrodil had been ravaged.  Skyrim had nothing to do with it beyond any individual Nords who joined the Legion.  Just because the Imperials couldn't effectively defend Cyrodil doesn't mean that the Nords couldn't effectively defend Skyrim.  And remember that the Redguards in Hammerfell managed to repel the Thalmor themselves without the help of the Empire.

Nobody, I'm just saying there is much more to the battle than "they are naturally talented". Strategy is far more important within the literature spread throughout the elder scrolls world and I hope this is more than just romanticism.
