Dune

I just got every book in the dune series. So far I've read one of the books and I loved it. Anyone else a fan?

Yes. But I'm too lazy to read, so I've only seen the movies.

You have to read the books. The movie is good if you're a Lynch fan, but there aren't any pugs in Dune! (also, Paul doesn't make it rain) The Sci Fi mini-series were much truer to the books.

Raist, avoid the books written by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, or at least wait until you've read Frank Herbert's original 6 and then poison your mind with KJA's awful shit.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

I picked up a Dune book in the library once and started reading a couple of pages. I read like a history book and I was almost starting to wonder why people like Dune so much, but then I realised that it had a subtitle below the massive DUNE text, and that it was a shitty extended universe sequel. Either that or it was actually written by Frank Herbert and I just never knew I hated the Dune series for all this time, but I don't think so.

You might have picked up God Emperor of Dune. It's a bit like a history book, and is a little boring at first. If you read all of them a second time, you'd probably appreciate GEoD much more.

I read LOTR and wondered the same thing.

Yeah, I know I said movies, but I meant the miniseries, sorry. I've seen the Lynch one too of course. There are lots of books I intend to read sometime. The Dune books and The Dark Tower books are among those.

I've been reading a The Man With No Name book for several months, and it's not even that long. I can only be arsed to read when I find nothing else to do.

This. I read all six in one week, then threw the first Brian Herbert book out of the window ten pages in.

I just recently read the first one and loved it.  Plan to read the other five written by Frank Herbert sooner or later.  Interestingly, the guy who let me borrow the book also warned me against reading the books from after he stopped writing them.  I doubt that a good series can ever be satisfying when written by someone other than the person who started it.

Well, there's also the fact that KJA and Bobo don't know when to stop. They've now written more books with "Dune" on the cover than Frank Herbert. Plus, they added some ridiculous shit to the series but I can't go into it without spoiling FH's series. Well, I can say they created "water worms" without spoiling anything, lol.

EDIT: also transvestite robots, I shit you not.

I read the prequel to the original dune (the one where she has peter) and now i'm reading the original dune. It's nice because I get to start the first book already kind of knowing what's going on.

Oh god.. who's Peter? Piter De Vries? Seriously avoid the garbage written by KJA, Paul is not a circus performer.

Err I think I meant the baby jessica has whatever its name is.

I noticed kja took some artistic liberties including killing off a mentat that is still alive in the first book. He also formed all of these huge alliances in their pasts that magically disappear. According to kja they saved Ix but 12 years later they can't even get a few ships.

Glad you're reading Dune now. Where are you at? I've been thinking of reading them all again.

The only thing I know about DUNE is that
the protagonist is the Mahdi, the reincarnation of Mahoma at the end of the world
The Fremen think he is the Mahdi, but their religion is not Islam.  Their beliefs were manipulated by the Missionaria Protectiva.

Also, spoiler tags don't work on this site.

I have the whole Dune series on my E-reader, and I will get around to re-reading it eventually, but say I wanted to watch it also: which is the best adaptation I should get?

For accuracy you should watch the Sci Fi channel Dune and Children of Dune miniseries (that's as far as they went), if you're a David Lynch fan you should watch the movie made in 1984, it is bizarre.  There hasn't ever been a really good adaptation of the books, I think the concepts are just too hard to translate.

I somehow missed the books and the movie. I read the wiki article and it sounds interesting.

It really was interesting. Like it had the potential to be a very good scifi universe then i forgot i was reading the series I guess.
