Xfce 4.10 approaching release phase
« on: October 21, 2011, 04:31:45 AM »
More information: http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.10/roadmap

The first pre-release of Xfce 4.10 is set to be released in just over two weeks, coinciding with the feature freeze for this release. This will start the release phase for Xfce 4.10, during which time it will be polished, before seeing a final release in January next year. This gives plenty of time for it to gracefully transition into Debian unstable, and thereafter testing, before wheezy is frozen in July.

The reason why the Xfce 4.10 release is such a big deal for me is that Xfce 4.8 was an incredibly buggy release. A number of things were rewritten from scratch for 4.8, and while they might offer better features than what was in Xfce 4.6, they just haven't had the same amount of testing and the more obvious bugs haven't all been ironed out yet. To their credit, the Xfce developers have recognised this, and have deliberately made some conservative decisions in order to (at least in part) work on stabilising rather than improving the Xfce codebase for the 4.10 release -- the decision to stick with GTK+ 2 rather than upgrade to GTK+ 3 is one of the more noteworthy examples.

So, while I love the features Xfce 4.8 has to offer and wouldn't ask for very much more in that area, I am really hoping Xfce 4.10 will bring some more stability to these features I know and love. The fact that it looks set to be included in wheezy before it gets frozen means that Debian won't be supporting the buggy 4.8 release in the next Debian stable (the current Debian stable release has 4.6). Overall, I think its timing couldn't be better.
I'm going to side with the white supremacists.

I suggest another name for Xfce like prancing possum or something.  'Xfce' has no consumer appeal.

Didn't Google just release ice-cream sandwich as their latest release?

Prancing Possum would be just as good. Its clear you would do well at a multi-billion dollar software firm. You seem to know what customers want. They aren't interested in "the Xfce developers have recognised this, and have deliberately made some conservative decisions in order to (at least in part) work on stabilising rather than improving the Xfce codebase for the 4.10 release". That's just nonsense that only people with huge beards would be interested in.

I would like to hear more about Prancing Possum as information becomes available.

In my mind, 4.10 comes before 4.8.
I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

Seriously Parse, or somewhat serious anyway, if Debian can co-opt Toy Story names, Xfce could co-opt Python names and things like Poofy Poonagger naturally spring to mind.

Edit:  I wouldn't go for 'nasty spotted prancer' though, with or without the possum part.

I've used the moniker "Prancing Possum" on several occasions.

Indeed. However, this is entirely up to the Xfce maintainers and not myself, and is unrelated to the value of the actual product.

I don't care whether it's called Xfce or Prancing Possum or Dongwaffles. It's a good desktop environment, and that's why I use it.

Well, you're a good old egg to let me blunder into your thread and yet remain gentlemanly.  I hope Xfce 4.10 is a winner.

You do care, and you really want for it to be named Dongwaffles. Prove me wrong.
