The Soviets and U.S space agencies did work together, first in secret and then later in the open as they found they no longer had to hide it so much. This took place during the cold war. A russian soyuz craft was used with an unused apollo shuttle during the cold war under the guise of detente. Besides the facts of their collaboration, during the cold war you never knew who was working with who, or for who. Brother Felix (R) has documented his theory which suggests the U.S actually allowed the first satellite to be launched by the russians to ascertain a tremendous budget later that year to finance technology they already had and had just given to the russians.
