What has happened to food?
« on: September 21, 2011, 12:23:43 PM »
http://www.cracked.com/article_19433_the-6-most-horrifying-lies-food-industry-feeding-you.html

Food in these cases is no longer considered to be "food", it is more like "processed pseudo-organic semi-nutrients". What the hell is wrong with the corporations that make them? Will they do anything for profit? No more orange juice for me.
we're expected to throw up our hands and just BELIEVE.

You didn't know that about OJ? Haven't you ever drank fresh OJ you see being squeezed in front of you and wondered why it tastes so very, very different from Shop-bought stuff?

I'm not concerned about all the chemicals.  I'd eat 100% artificially created food if it had the required nutritional levels I need to survive.

What bothers me is that the "free range" eggs I've been spending a lot of money on are total BS.

You weren't aware of this?

I've known for a long time that free range, at least in this country, only legally enforces around 3 chickens per square meter. Normal caged chickens, I think, are 6 per square meter. In reality, they only get a tiny bit more room. If you want the 'chickens roaming free' thing, then you buy 'organic' (which costs a lot more than the $1-2 increase 'free range' demands, try $5-10). I'm not sure how it works in America, it's probably much different.

I eat food that tastes good. The food I eat (usually) does not make me sick, and it sustains me. None of this matters to me.

They claim to be Organic.  I'll try to look them up.

They're listed on http://www.certifiedhumane.org/index.php?page=pete-gerry-s-organic-eggs

But I'm not sure just how correct that is.

http://vimeo.com/19473955
Found that but the video shows a different packaging label. Nellie's Nest.

But it seems that it's probably a good site then.
http://compassionatefarming.org/resources.html

If that site links certifiedhumane.org as being an advocacy group, then it's probably safe to say it's fine.  Or at least not too bad.

The free range chicken debate has had a bit of media exposure over here recently.  That said I can't see anything being done about it.

As for the hamburgers/mince meat, who eats that crap anyway?

The same could be said for the rest of the whole article, if you are aware what is going into foods and actually take time to read the labels, you would probably avoid a lot of those issues.  Even better if you do things like make your own bread and OJ like someone else mentioned.  To me it all boils down to people being ignorant about food choices and even more ignorant about what a healthy (read mainly unprocessed foods) diet means.

Ground beef? I do. And I will continue to consume everything on this list. It's like when you realize there are bugs in your eyebrows so you keep scratching them until you forget about it and live happily ever after.

Your choice.  The analogy is a bad one though; body parasites can't be avoided, bad food can.

Don't support organic meat or poultry. It might sound appealing but in reality to legally claim to be organic, a farmer can't use any artificial products on their livestock, including medicines, animals are either treated with 'homeopathic' remedies or, more accurately, no remedies at all.

When buying free range eggs, look for ones approved by the RSPCA or whatever is the local equivalent.

Approximately 3-4 billion years of time investment was required to produce the first vegetable.

Which is not a large expenditure, considering the age of the Universe is around 13 billion years old.

I would consider 25% of my lifetime to be a large expenditure of my time. Do you not agree?

No. I would consider exceeding >50% as large.
