I doubt that there would be room for a good camera that could deal with the pressure and temperature changes and could withstand the heat and friction of leaving the atmosphere.
And apearantly the thing cost 2000 euro's and was the size of a damn luchbox, no way you could, with our current technology have sent a good camera up there.
So, you can't really do it yourself. You still have to go by NASA photo's, that are clearly corrupt.
