Feminism
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:38:55 PM »
Just wanted to hear some thoughts on the subject in general.

Are we living in a patriarchial society where women are being oppressed on a daily basis? Are women inferior to males? Are they superior? Intellectually? Physically? Are we equal in all aspects, or in some aspects? Would total equality be a good thing? Are gender roles counter-intuitive and mundane?

Q. Are men better than women?

A. Yes, they are.

Q. Are men smarter than women?

A. Yes, they are.

Q. I disagree. There are plenty of poor and starving men out in the world.

A. Well, if they were so smart they wouldn't be poor now, would they?

Q. But what about Brittany Spears, surely she is just a dumb blonde who got lucky. How can you say that she is better than anyone else?

A. Brittany Spears spent years of her life training to become a singer and had the wherewithal to get herself to the top. She made the right connections and had the drive to succeed, unlike you.

Q. What about all of the people who were just born men. You can't really say that they are smarter or better than a woman.

A. Yes you can. When parents reproduce they are really just making copies of themselves. Males are made from the successful parts of the parents, women from the bad parts. Male children are a continuation of one's [successful] self

Q. But women don't really have the opportunity to make it. When you are bornfemale it's hard to get out of poverty.

A. That excuse may have worked in the middle ages, but these days there are endless opportunities available. One does not even need to go to college to educate themselves in a field. With the internet and free public libraries it is possible to self educate yourself in fields like technology, law, or business. There are countless self-educated techs and businessmen out there. Abraham Lincoln passed the Bar Exam without ever setting a foot into Law School, after all.

It is also possible to start a business these days without a heavy investment in capital. Internet businesses are regularly run out of bedrooms.

Q. But how can women get themselves out of poverty when they are cooking and cleaning all the time?

A. If you are cooking and cleaning all day and turn on the TV when you get finished then you obviously do not have a drive to succeed. It's your fault that you are poor, clearly.
You don't want to make an enemy of me. I'm very powerful.

Here, we are equal in our legal rights, but that's as far as it goes.
Being the same is a horrible thing; being equal is not.

Just a few random examples:

-Women are generally physically weaker
-Women generally have worse cardiovascular circulation in their limbs
-Women generally have superior language skills
-Women generally outperform men in fine motor skill
-Women are generally faster and more accurate at identifying emotions
-Men can't carry babies
-Men generally are better at math and geometry

Women tend to make sandwhiches.

Not really. Divorce laws are generally in favor of women. Only men get drafted in war. Men also have no say in what the mother of the child wants to do.

I can partially vouch for this.  I knew a female tuba player once and she was dreadful.

I'd just like for people to be judged on their individual merits, but I guess that is a feminazi pipe dream.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

i've been thinking about this for a while now after an article i read somewhere.

Should men still open doors for women for instance?

Heres my thought - i am actually a very independant person, and will try to tackle most jobs myself,  which is just as well, as i've learnt that i can't rely on anyone to help.

But i do struggle with some physical jobs like cutting my hedges. Its not because  i'm afriad to get dirty hands or break a fingernail, but the hedges are a foot taller than me, the path is very uneven and the hedge cutter is very heavy.  So, although i do get the job done, the hedges do not have the nice even look that i'm wanting.
So, If i ask for help, am i seen as weak, or i'm unwilling to do the job myself?
When you're right, no-one remembers. When you're wrong, no-one forgets.

 And yes, definitely a female.

Weakling.

J/k.. lots of people hire other people to trim their hedges. Even manly men don't want to trim the hedges.

Hey if a girl asks I'll trim her hedges.  Bare, runway, heart shaped.

Hedges was an euphemism for something right?
To be fair, sometimes what FE'ers say makes so little sense that it's hard to come up with a rebuttal.

I'll hold doors open for anyone, but the distance they are away from me for which I will still hold it increases if they are female.

Does their attractiveness affect the equation?

I do this, but not because they're women. I'll hold a door open for anyone who hasn't been a dickhead to me just because it's a nice thing to do.
I'm going to side with the white supremacists.

Don't be a bastard to people, respect their personal space and feelings. Apply this to men and women equally.

Call it whatever you want, I'm happy to be called a feminist when it applies to issues concerning women.

Let's separate the ideas.  To most people, feminism now connotes applying unequal opportunity to obtain a so-called equality of outcome.  Now me, I just prefer equality of opportunity and equality under the law because if some preference is bestowed on one person, there's another person getting the old shaft and denied his/her/its rights of equality under the law and equality of opportunity; this is self-evident to me.  Can't have it both ways and equality of outcome can't be had or even come close without heavy government coercion.  Of course, this gives me the label "non-progressive" and I can expect angry pickets in front of my house.

Yes, the distance increases further if they are attractive females.
