Introduce your team
« on: July 17, 2011, 06:48:02 AM »
Most of the geeks among us will have more than one computer in our arsenal. Here's your chance to introduce them all by name, and provide a brief description of their features.

Mine are all named for Star Wars characters, as I was going through a Star Wars phase when I started naming them. So, here they are:

--- obi-wan ---
My first ever computer. Bought it second-hand in 2005 with my hard-earned money from flipping burgers while at high school.
Model: Compaq of some sort
CPU: Pentium III, 1 GHz
RAM: 256 MiB
Hard drive: 20 GB, a Seagate of some sort
Operating system: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 "squeeze"

--- luke ---
My first laptop. Also the first computer on which I installed an OS other than Microsoft Windows.
Model: Dell Inspiron 9400
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.16 GHz
RAM: 2 GiB
Hard drive: 160 GB IDE
Operating system: Triple boot (Debian GNU/Linux "sid" / OpenBSD/amd64 4.9-current / Debian GNU/kFreeBSD "sid")

--- palpatine ---
Location: Fremont, California, USA
Model: Linode 512 (Xen VPS)
CPU: Quad Intel Xeon, 2.27 GHz
RAM: 512 MiB
Hard drive: 20 GB Xen virtual disk
Operating system: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 "squeeze"

--- artoo ---
Model: Lemote Yeeloong 8089B
CPU: Loongson 2F, 796 MHz
RAM: 1 GiB
Hard drive: 120 GB Corsair Force SSD
Operating system: OpenBSD/loongson 4.9

--- tentacool ---
Model: KVM virtual machine (i686)
CPU: Unsure, don't know how to get that info from Hurd
RAM: 1 GiB
Hard drive: 15 GB emulated IDE
Operating system: Debian GNU/Hurd "sid"

--- leia ---
Model: Samsung Galaxy S II
CPU: Dual-Core Samsung Exynos 4210, 1.2 GHz
RAM: 1 GiB
Storage: 2 GB Flash memory, 16 GB NAND memory
Operating system: Cyanogen Mod 7.1

--- sabe ---
A second VPS to serve as a backup server for palpatine, but has not yet been commissioned as such.
Location: Fremont, California, USA
Model: Linode 512 (Xen VPS)
CPU: Quad Intel Xeon, 2.27 GHz
RAM: 512 MiB
Hard drive: 20 GB Xen virtual disk
Operating system: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 "squeeze"

Mine is called Parsifal.  It is the one and only.  If there were others I would call them Parsifal 1, 2, 3 and so on.  They all run Windows 3.1 because it likes it.

First there's Fox, the one I'm using right now. Then there's Falco, Peppy, and Slippy, they don't work right now.

My most impressive computer sits in my closet.  It is a Sanyo 8088.   10 MHz, 640KB RAM, 40 MB HDD.    It also has (very rare for its era), an UVGA graphics card!!!  I believe it still has a 4800 baud modem, and first generation soundblaster card.

I read that as "gnat-sees"

Mine is called "Apocalypse" and is several years old now but still decent specs (and upgradable; so still has some life left in it.)
Model: Nomud Industries Apocalypse 9000+
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400
HDD: (1) 500GB Western Digital WD50 (C:/ nicknamed "Conquest"), (2) 160GB Seagate ST316002 (D:/ nicknamed "Death")
GPU: nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 1GB
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate x64

When I have my ipod or psp connected, they're mapped to drive P:/ and both nicknamed Pestilence.  I have two DVD drives, which are drives E:/ and F:/ so unfortunately I can't really use F:/ for Famine, otherwise I'd have the whole four horsemen allusion to complete the "Apocalypse" theme.  I could remap the drives but I don't really care that much.

I can upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Quad still, and RAM is upgradable to 8GB.  Obviously can upgrade the video card too but it's pretty decent as-is.

Anyway, that's enough nerdity.

Might help if you upgrade your CPU if the motherboard will allow it, and upgrading to Vista or 7 would probably help too especially since you can't use more than 2GB RAM in XP.  Did you add more RAM to that, or did it come with 4GB?  Dell is silly if the latter.  Dell is silly anyway.

I added the RAM. The system recognizes 3.25 of it. I probably won't be doing any upgrades though. I don't do much PC gaming anyway.

I made a new friend today. It doesn't follow my Star Wars naming convention because I set it up at work, and followed our nautical/marine naming convention there.

I agree, knowing how something works specifically is stupid.  All you need is to have a vague understanding that it does work, and then argue about how it works based on your imagination.

I think computer manufacturers program the computers so that they display incorrect information, in a conspiracy to trick you...

--- Deus Ex Machina ---
My first self-purchased desktop. Bought the components all new ~2005 with my hard-earned money from making Subway sandwiches while at high school.
Model: Custom built
CPU: Something cool that got upgraded to something cooler.
RAM: 2 GB
Hard drive: 125 GB for operating system and programs + 500 GB for my documents/files et cetera. Since then, I've added over 4 TB of additional space.
Operating system: Windows XP
Additional: Tower has shiny black car paint finish for a window on the left side + a cylindrical electric plasma light that smelled like ozone when you turned it on.[/b]
In 2005, it was "teh shit". Also was my single largest purchase until buying a car this year.

--- Ankh ---
My first and only laptop. Also the first computer on which I got to try out Vista.
Model: No Clue
CPU: Forget
RAM: 2 GB I think
Hard drive: 250 GB
Operating system: Vista:Aids

I use it primarily for word processing at school.

--- the dinosaur --- [nickname, not the actual name of the computer]
Not mine, it's my parents' old computer that I played crappy games on when I was 6.
  • If I open mspaint twice, it would crash. It could barely handle Rodent's Revenge, Ski Free, and Chip's Challenge.
  • It got it's nickname from the garbled sound it makes whenever it is working hard (when ever it is on). When the noises of the hard drive began, it sounded like gears twisting into a destructive mess. Now it sounds like a velociraptor chewing on a mangled rusty car.
  • It takes 7-10 minutes to reach the boot up screen.
  • The mouse lags horribly (without clicking anything).
  • The screen is smaller than my cat.
...Nothing important is on there that hasn't been backed up. From over here I can see it says "Gateway" on it.

I dare not touch it.
