FES Alcoholic Beverage Thread
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:00:06 AM »
Aside from the Drinking thread in RM, I thought a more serious thread was in order for the discussion of alcoholic beverages.
Here's my rundown of what I like.

Beer: Developed such a taste for beer recently I drink it all the time. Prefer darker beers, Toohey's Old is the only stuff widely available around here but keen to try some others. Guinness and other stouts are still a bit much for me, maybe one day I will like it. Carlton Draught is probably my non-dark beer of choice, tastes nice and malty out of a stubbie. Not that keen on pale ale's in general, and most light beers don't taste as good.

Wine: Wine is pretty expensive per drink and doesn't have the fun of spirits so I tend to avoid, however cheap wine sold in casks is the most common drink on campus, and at $10 for 4L of cheap wine it gets you pretty ripped.

Whiskey: Love a bit of Jack Daniels but haven't tried a whole lot else

Scotch: Expensive, only tried two or three expensive varieties and can't afford a whole bottle myself

Bourbon: Definitely my favourite spirit, definitely drink unmixed. Maker's Mark and Gentleman Jack are both excellent.

Rum: I wish I could bring myself to enjoy it but I really don't like it. Best I have had is probably Mount Gay, mixed with coke it was pretty drinkable. Not keen on the Australian Bundaberg rum, its pretty rough.

Vodka: Wouldn't touch the stuff straight, but great for mixing. Russian Standard is the usual for me, cheap and decent, though clubs and bars all use Smirnoff Red Label which is pretty meh. Some of the premixes in cans are delicious, particularly lemonade or citrus varieties.

Gin: Had a few cheap gins, surprisingly good with coke and lime and in cocktails but apart from that its filthy filthy stuff. I believe I had Gordons last time which was definitely on the cheap side

Tequila: Is the devil

Other Spirits: Don't mind a few liqueurs, particularly curacao.
Recently religious due to the impending rapture.

What is this nonsense?

I was wondering the other day though. You can make alcohol out of any starchy or sugary fruit or vegetable.

Wine from grapes
Beer from hops
Barcardi from coconuts
Midouri from melons
schnapps from peaches
Moonshine from potatoes.
Almost anything you can think of, someone has turned into booze.

But not tomatoes. This humble fruit/veggie has been forgotten. It would ferment, I have no doubt. You could add sugar to help it out anyway.

Now I am not suggesting this would be a smooth and refreshing drink (though tomatoes are used in many cocktails like a red eye), but I would imagine it would have many applications for cooking. A nice pasta or pie sauce for example.

I will call my new creation TomartiniTM.

I shall go on dragons den and be rich, rich I tell you! Muhahahahaha!

Mead is a good choice, though harder to find than an average wine. It's so sweet and delicious.

It wouldn't be hard to make an alcoholic tomato drink. If you allow yeast to do their yeast thing too long in a batch of soda it becomes alcoholic. You could just do the same with tomatoes.

Yeah, I'm gonna be so rich.

I do wonder why no one else does this though.

Also should it be a low alcoholic drink like beer, medium like wines (my suspicion as best for cooking), or high like vodka.

And then which tomatoes make the best TomartiniTM? Beefy tomatoes with lots of fibre and flavour, or small sweet baby tomatoes.

My research into the earth's shape may have to take a back seat whist I perfect TomartiniTM.

Green cock beer.

Also aniseed vodka is the stuff of dreams.

And pear and lime cider tastes nicer than it sounds.

Before I got preggers I was gonna brew my own stuff, I was gonna make alcoholic ginger beer and skanky wine. But gave up on that idea....but I do have a big bucket of lingonberries in the basement that have probably fermented by now

Where I come from we generally are drinking the corn variant of shine. Living in Appalachia means that I come across it quite often. Though from what I just read the term moonshine does not restrict what source the spirit is derived from.

The best alcoholic beverage I have had tasted something like a bloody mary.  The tomato idea is certainly not new, however if you are good enough you could  make something of it.

If tomato juice didn't taste like straight ass I'd drink a bloody mary. Real men drink their drinks straight up.

they are made with V8 at lots of places.  I meant to say that the best alcoholic drink made from a tomato I have had tasted sort of like a bloody mary.
