RAM
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:43:36 AM »
My uncle's PC has 4gb of 1600MHz ripjaws RAM in it, though he's got it underclocked to 1333MHz (clicky), and my system has 8gb of 1333MHz ripjaws RAM in it (clicky).

Would it be possible to swap one stick each so we'd each of a 4gb and a 2gb stick?

Ah you fooled me again. I thought this was going to be a thread about sheep.

RAM tends to come in matched pairs. Even 2 identical sticks that are unmatched may suffer performance losses. When you start mixing 4Gb and 2Gb sticks it gets messy.
You'd have to read exactly what the manufacturer says. High performance RAM is less likely to accept this as easily as stock RAM as the matching of sticks is done to enhance performance and get the best out of it.

Just overclock the capacity of the smaller stick to 3GB, and underclock the bigger one to 3GB. Problem?

I think you could do that, though I'm not entirely sure how a dual-channel setup would handle having different capacity sticks in each channel. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't destroy anything, so try it and find out.
You don't want to make an enemy of me. I'm very powerful.

It should be fine. What they usually do is underclock the faster RAM so you probably won't notice anything.
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

Considering both sets have the same voltages and timings, I think I'll give it a go.  I'll post later when I try it.
