Is the sky really blue?
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:51:21 AM »
It always seemed more cyan than blue to me. On another note, today is a good day. Not a cloud in the sky, not a care in the world.

If you're the biggest concern you have is which shade of blue the sky is, you're clearly having a great day  ;)

There are many shades of blue, including...

(wait for it)

(wait a little longer)

(keep waiting)

...sky blue.

(was it worth the wait?)

(Yes, indeed! I still think it's more of a cyan tint than blue, though.)

There's clouds here, but since it's supposed to be mid 70's all week, and back home is supposed to hit 103, I'm totally fine.

The cyan tint is due to pollution and pollen.

It could simply be because the blueshift is incomplete, though. There's not a lot of pollution in the country-side and even less pollen in late summer.

The sky isn't blue, it's just the result of refraction of sunlight through the atmosphere.  It appears blue.  Or cyan. Or whatever.

Is there a difference between being blue and appearing to be blue?

That depends. I hear there are paints which can be treated to appear as being another colour than what they actually are, if that makes sense. For example, you can paint a car white with said paint and then treat it to make it black. It's called paramagnetic paint, apparently.

There is no property to the sky that makes it blue.  It has no pigment.  It does not reflect or emit light in any certain wavelength.  It's the light propogating through it that appears in a blueish wavelength.

it's scattering, not refraction ;) (refraction plays a role, though). sorry to be nit picking
