Are Round Earthers Internet Trolls?
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:42:44 AM »
On How Stuff Works there is a description of an Internet Troll.

From http://computer.howstuffworks.com/troll4.htm

    -------------
The first step to dealing with trolls is learning how to recognize them. The following traits are clues:

    - Does the person ask the same questions worded in different ways? Does the person ignore suggestions or responses from other members of the community? If the community has a frequently asked question (FAQ) section, does the person seemingly refuse to read it?
    - Has the person posted inflammatory remarks that have no real substance to them?
    - Does he or she make it a habit to post messages that include insults and vulgar language?
    - Does he or she respond to other members in a purely negative, critical way?
    - Does the person post messages that are generally off-topic? Does he or she seem to want only attention rather than discuss the topic at hand?
    - Does the person resurrect old conversations or discussions that were once controversial within the community? Some trolls enjoy bringing back old arguments to encourage dissent within a group.
    - When confronted with a counter argument, does the person in question change tactics rather than answer the points made by another member? Does the person employ logical fallacies within their posts?

If the answer to these questions is yes, there's a good chance you're dealing with a troll.
    -------------

Seems to fit the bill to me.

According to How Stuff Works the RE'ers who visit this website are little more than internet trolls.

Kind gentlemen, I do wish to declare that although these fora are for the sole purpose of education of the flat earth, I would also enjoy expressing my gratitude for the opportunity to post in them.  Thank you all for your time and interest in this subject.

Tom, what make you think that you can just toss accusations around like that all willy-nilly?  >:(

Sounds like this entire board. With one or.....er, one exception, none of the FE'ers seem capable for maintaining a sensible debate.

Oh my good sir, but the conspiracy theory only applies when it is conveniently supportive in your cause, so yes, it can indeed be trusted.

You have to admit, some of the descriptions of a troll are uncanny when you think about RE'ers.

  • Does the person ask the same questions worded in different ways? Does the person ignore suggestions or responses from other members of the community? If the community has a frequently asked question (FAQ) section, does the person seemingly refuse to read it?

And the same can be said for an FE'er.

- When confronted with a counter argument, does the person in question change tactics rather than answer the points made by another member? Does the person employ logical fallacies within their posts?

When do we ever post off topic? It is usually the RE'ers that baww in every thread about this or that.

FE'ers have only the most valid of logic.

And yet most RE'ers have read the FAQ, it's only the newbies that haven't. In comparison, this board has veteran FE'ers that still troll each and every thread.

FE'ers have only the most valid of logic.
Really? Have you seen some of Tom's logic put to use?

How many of the clues do we use here? Because that applies to FE'rs and Re'rs alike tbh.

Including yourself.

Sometimes we need to ask the same question over and over again because we never get proper answers.  For example, how many times have I asked you how you can tell the difference between moonlight from bioluminescent shrimp and any other form of luminescence without any proper answer?

Moonshrimp are utter bollocks. I can hardly blame anyone for being skeptical of harmful moonlight and civilized dinosauria either, though both ideas have more evidence than moonshrimp (scant though it is).

For the sake of FES should brining up moon shrimp with out providing evidence be considered trolling?

your empirical evidence is entirely subjective and no different from just looking at the moon. Watch; I am looking at the moon now and the empirical evidence for reflected sunlight is glorious

I'd also love to hear how you know it's bioluminescent

I do not question John Davis's sincerity. If it is indeed false then I have been completely fooled and I'd be the first to admit it.

But I don't think I could say the same for many other FE'ers on here.

Thank you;  its very refreshing to hear that.  I agree with your assessment that many here that claim to be FEers are likely not however.  It also strikes me as odd the extremely low amount of religious flat earth believers here (with some notable exceptions) compared to the overall populace.

I find that interesting too, seeing as how historically the flat Earth belief has been a religious one.

Though, perhaps most are just not as vocal about their religious beliefs out of tact and manners.  Plus, the definite movement going on to divorce FET of religious ties (at least the necessity of religious ties for truth.)

If it is divorced, then Carpenter's 100 proofs would be kinda pointless, not that I'd care because it was more like, "25 outdated reasons that the Earth is not a globe and 75 reasons why God is amazing."

Speaking as a theist, it is plain to me that the shape of the world is not affected by, nor affects, religious/philosophical perception. They are entirely seperate beliefs.
