You don't pay the electricity bill when your server is in a world-class data centre and not your home. Yet another reason to play Wesnoth instead of Minecraft!

Except 2 things you're missing.

1. I'd still have to pay server rental.
2. Minecraft can be played on your server too.  And because it's java based, it's 100% source code accessible to you thus fulfilling at least one definition of "Free" Software.

I pay the server rental anyway. It costs me nothing extra to run wesnothd on it.

2. Minecraft can be played on your server too.

Can, but won't.

And because it's java based, it's 100% source code accessible to you thus fulfilling at least one definition of "Free" Software.

Incorrect.

The minecraft source code is not available. It is commercial software with DRM.

This is all true, but being commercial is irrelevant. There exists plenty of commercial free software; Linux is a good example.

How so?
I've edited the .jar files myself.  I know it's there and in plain text format.

As for DRM:
Please tell me how it has DRM.  I don't seem to have any restrictions on playing it in any way regardless of computer or lack of online login.

Incorrect. JAR files do not typically contain source code. If they did, it would need to be compiled every time you want to run it.

As for DRM:
Please tell me how it has DRM.  I don't seem to have any restrictions on playing it in any way regardless of computer or lack of online login.

Distribution of binary files without source code is a crude form of DRM, as it inhibits modification.

Granted, you have to sign up (for free) to get it and agree to some conditions so it doesn't fit ALL the definitions of Free Software, but you can get the code.

If we paid for a server, it would be purely for Minecraft as we have no other use for a server.

Regardless, I'm not interested. There being an Ocean between everyone else and I shits on the fun of a Minecraft server.

It's not so bad if the web server has the connection to handle it.  Most home servers, however, do not.

Incorrect and grammatically invalid.

Even ignoring the Ocean, private connection upload speeds are usually rubbish, and we ruled out paying for a server. As for the grammar, it's Saturday and I don't fuck a give!

Just going to chime in and say that King Mugsy's Savage Domain is still available and up to date. I play there regularly. IP is 94.22.109.11:2556
Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

As for DRM:
Please tell me how it has DRM.  I don't seem to have any restrictions on playing it in any way regardless of computer or lack of online login.

  • Even if you have legitimately bought the came you cannot play it online without permission from big bother.
  • If you play a legitimate, paid for copy without an internet connection an annoyance watermark is plastered onto the screen.
  • If you just play it normally (logging onto the minecraft server to verify that you are using a legit copy), then it informs big brother every time you play the game.

Now I would like to say that as DRM goes this is particularly unobtrusive but I still oppose all forms of DRM. Even moderate DRM is a danger because it raises the waterline of what's acceptable. We should reject all forms of DRM that we are not taken advantage of by technology and those in control of it. (Not that anything like that could ever happen outside of science fiction).

Fair enough though you can play on servers without logging in provided that server is set to not check verification.

Be me, I agree with DRM. I believe that a business has the right to ensure that it's product is not distributed by an unauthorized distributed.

As for your Sony link, I'm not sure what that has to do with the discussion. They don't want a class action suit against them if they get hacked. So if you're afraid of losing your personal data, don't use it.
To expect perfect security in any system is unreasonable and to sue because a system was not perfect is also unreasonable.
This isn't to say that they shouldn't be held responsible if they intentionally or through negligence do not ensure a standard level of security. But that should be something determined by the courts.

How is DRM not designed to ensure the above by restricting the ownership of a digital product to the original purchaser?

What is a wesnothd?

The name of the Wesnoth server program, following the Unix convention of appending a "d" (for "daemon") to services. wesnoth is the name of the Wesnoth client (i.e., the game itself); wesnothd is the name of the Wesnoth server.

How is DRM not designed to ensure the above by restricting the ownership of a digital product to the original purchaser?

Once the software has been purchased from the business, it cannot be considered to belong to the business.

If you buy a laptop, should you be restricted from selling it to a friend when you no longer have a use for it? After all, you would be distributing a product created by a business without their authorisation.
