Why do we let our daughters dress like that?
« on: March 23, 2011, 01:05:57 PM »
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703899704576204580623018562.html

Interesting article. I think there's some truth in what she says but then again I'd disagree with things shes implies when she goes on about how she should have waited until marriage to have sex with her husband and that part of the article.... So I'm caught between partially agreeing that preteens shouldn't be wearing 'sluttly' clothes but then I don't think all sex is automatically bad as a teen like she seems to imply among other things.

Thoughts?
I saw a slight haze in the hotel bathroom this morning after I took a shower, have I discovered a new planet?

How do you teach kids to be reasonable, to like themselves, and to engage in meaningful relationships?

This sexualisation of the young is a cultural hang-over from the ancient Greeks, who typically married girls in their early teens, and routinely had same-sex relations with barely pubescent boys. The influence of ancient Greek culture on our society is a force for evil against us as we struggle to uphold a basic morality.

ITT; the fashion police.

The reasons are simple; society and socialisation.
Why do we fall back to earth? Because our weight pushes us down, no laws, no gravity pulling us. It is the law of intelligence.

So you associate teens wearing sluttier clothes with statutory rape?
If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

Ancient Greek children used to wear revealing robes in order to entice elderly sophists to fornicate with them.

It's not a sexualisation of the young. It is an attempt to hold on to innocence for a longer period by demanding our young stay chaste and unmarried until they reach a certain age.

With the exception of the man love part, almost everyone did that up until the Enlightenment. Mainly because lives were shorter and parents simply wouldn't have the time to bring up children if they didn't do it early on.

May I ask what led you to this conclusion without actually having lived in the time period?

Ancient Roman vomitoriums weren't actually for vomiting, but were simply entrances to stairways in the Colosseum.

Yes, but vomiting on purpose was still a part of Roman life.  They had slaves dedicated to just the task of cleaning the vomit from ones face as he ate.

I must say the show Toddlers and Tiaras is probably one of the most disturbing main stream shows on TV.

Is it a toddler beauty pageant show or something?
I first saw that in a movie little miss sunshine, I was quite shocked when I found out it actually exists.

Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

If i'm linked to it during a reasonable discussion I expect it to be fairly unbiased. Even the shittiest reporters will write in a less biased manner than whoever did that piece.

I missed the part where something was being discusses. Anyway, you're right, next time I'll get a less biased article.

Because the more sexually open will statistically be more likely to have childeren.

The more sexually open are more likely to set an example to said childeren that dressing like that is okay and that it is good to be more sexually open.

As a 20-year-old virgin who spends WAYYYY too much time arguing on the internet I am all for it.

Women should be put on a pedestal and treated with the utmost respect.  There may be a reason you dont have a girlfriend.  You think of them as a vagina/boob life support system.
