Sorry, but I don't see how the fluctation of sympathy = significance, or how a lack of such fluctuation = lack of significance.

I was the one asking for significance. I've yet to receive a response.

To what end is it significant?

you guys dont need to change how you care, just respect them.  dont go and post "re victory" or make pictures that poke fun
Oh jesus, get over that. We've already explained to you that it wasn't an RE victory over people dying, but on how the tsunami was traveling.

i know why it is a re victory, just you posted it here, not in the debate forums, or the Q&A forums
Once again, I didn't post it.

If you have ever lost someone that you care about in a tragic manner, then you wouldn't need to ask.  If you haven't, then you probably wouldn't understand.

What people seem to forget is that Divito is a confessed sociopath, so caring about the lives of other human beings who don't impact his own well-being is literally beyond his ability to comprehend.  What point is there debating about sympathy with someone to whom the concept is wholly alien?

Agree. He does sound like a sociopath. I didn't know he has already admitted it.

It's not beyond my ability to comprehend. Those that feel the need to actually say something sympathetic or compassionate are seeking validation and approval over their "morality." I have no inclination to shout "Hey, look at me! I'm saying something sympathetic over a horrendous disaster that affects my fellow humans! Look respectfully upon me!" It would be the same for those people that announce their donations to charity. They seek recognition, and that's a far lower level to occupy.

It makes people feel good to feign sympathy, but I act in accordance with that that showcases benefit. Emotions and touting things most people care not of, tend towards no benefit at all, and thus I showcase none. I am honest enough to admit it, unlike a lot of people.

Yes, yes, spoken like a true sociopath.  Sympathy must not be real because I can't feel it, etc.

No, not all death is tragic.  Sometimes death is a relief from suffering.  Not tragic, but sad none the less if it was someone that you care about.

But this thread is not about death, per se.  It's about the tsunami hitting Japan, so let's get back on topic.

I applaud Divito for being honest about his own reaction to the tragedy.  It does take balls to reject the societal convention if that's the way you really feel.

I resent his assumption that no one is *really* sympathetic to tragedy.

It appears I have overstayed my welcome.

Don't say that.

Reported for sexism.

I saw some media guy saying today that hydrogen was not explosive so how did this explosion happen and maybe the Japanese government was lying.  No one took exception.

I never made a personal reaction known to said tragedy. I came into it questioning a statement.

As for the actual topic of the thread, yes, it's an extremely unfortunate and horrific event for those affected and involved (Japan rocks). The premise as indicated in my attacked post, is the thing I detest, as I feel showcasing sympathy (whether real or imagined) is a call for attention, when people having such feelings can do far more constructive things to help the effort than talk about it on a forum.

Don't say that.

Sorry, just left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I need a break.

What a tragic event. I hope people in Japan will take such discussions about this tragic event as an indicator that they are in our thoughts.

Yes, but you offered an argument as to why it is not significant. I am not bound to respond to your original question in order to criticise your subsequent argument. As for why the death of someone you care about is significant, I have responded. What happens to people we care about is significant to us because of the meaning of the word care. That they and the course of their lives are significant to us is implicit in caring for them.

If you want to make an argument about how the death of people you know or have some other close interaction with is not significant (even to you), that's a different argument. Unless you can show that caring for someone can be distinguished from having an interest in the nature and continuation of their existence, your question is essentially non-sensical.

What a tragic event. I hope people in Japan will take such discussions about this tragic event as an indicator that they are in our thoughts.

No doubt the sociopathic ramblings and herd empathy of the internet masses will see them through this difficult time!

Well, Japan has sent for one of the two largest concrete pumps in the world.  It will be trucked to Atlanta from South Carolina and flown to Fukushima ASAP.  It won't be coming back home.

So it's the Chernobyl option, I guess, after all.  Why did they let some workers risk their lives if this was ever contemplated?
