That one tsunami a few years back killed like 500,000 people, so what's 1000 here or there?

Pretty significant if one of them is someone that you care about.

Then when someone I care about passes on I expect them to post in a thread I make about how sorry they are, and how tragic the death of a single human being is.

How does someone being alive or dead affect my caring about them?

the point is in japan, there is a large catastrophy, not as big as some, but still large.  you should still respect the deceased and not poke fun at them

The disaster and deaths are apparently not significant to you, a self centered person. However there a tradgedy going on for millions of people to whom this event is very significant. So don't think about them, just keep thinking about yourself.

To what end is it significant?

The significance is implicit in the act of caring.

Also, why is it that every time there's a thread on a huge tragedy or loss of life in the world, some stupid argument about how people die every day etc. springs up?

Simple. They think that it is very common for people to die everyday which is true. However, it doesn't mean that people should die everyday. They are implying "this is how it should be, people will die everyday."

I think you missed what we were talking about; I asked how someone that I care about being dead or alive is significant. My caring for individuals does not change based on their being alive or dead, nor does any event which they are part of. I know people are easily swayed in the moment, but fluctuation of sympathy is wholly annoying and fallacious.

And I always have to chuckle at the usage of "self-centered" as some sort of negative connotation. If no one was self-centered, we'd all be dead.

Because it's true. No one goes on every day and brings up the fact that people have died that day, but when something bad happens it's, "OH MY GOD THIS IS HORRIBLE PEOPLE DIED. :(" Fact of the matter is, there is really no reason to care about people outside your own little social bubble dying.

Nope. No reason to care. None at all.

As long as the disaster doesn't hurt the release date for the 3DS then I don't see a reason to care. Oh, I'm also a bit worried about the nuclear plant, but even then it most likely wont hit America's soil, so whatever.

Sorry, but I don't see how the fluctation of sympathy = significance, or how a lack of such fluctuation = lack of significance.
