Cool deleted post, Tom.

Now you look crazy!
I was replying to him saying something along the lines of "What's difficult about building a <$1000 PC anyway?" when he deleted it :(

By that guide, my system is around Exceptional and Enthusiastic.  Though my system is a few years old, it still plays Dragon Age 2 with High rez textures and all settings to max (aside from AA.  That's only at 4x) without a problem.
Tell me how can your rig be "Exceptional" or "Enthusiast" if Sandy Bridge, ATI 6xxx and Nvidia 5xx were all released in the last 6 months or less  ::)
I'm not basing it on specific components but general power and capability. Like t
1TB drive, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, ect...
Yes because that was still around a few years ago. What about the important things CPU/GPU/Motherboard. I.e. the stuff I specifically mentioned  ::)

Here's my specs then.  It may not have the flash of the newest stuff, but I doubt personal computer hardware has advanced significantly in 2 years.
  • Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
  • MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard
  • PowerColor AX4890 1GBD5-HM Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
  • AMD Phenom II X4 810 Deneb 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor HDX810WFGIBOX
  • Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory with LEDs Model BL2KIT25664TA1336
  • 1 x LG Black Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD?R DVD Burner SATA Model GGC-H20L
  • 1 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KSRTL 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
  • 1 x Western Digital Caviar WD1001FALS-00J7B1 1TB SATA Hard Drive.
Sorry my TB drive isn't as detailed on the list.  I bought it at Best Buy as a splurge item and don't feel like getting exact specs on it.  The rest I got off newegg so I had the order information.  I've also got a 1 KW power supply but that's not really relevant.

Well ok, it was great when I bought it.  Still is as far as I'm concerned.  And by the time I'm ready to upgrade again, games may actually start to surpass my current system at max settings.

Well, that's understandable, considering DA2 looks like it's from 2006.

Please tell me a game that you'd consider "high powered" so I can test it.  Preferably something with a demo.

Very nice system Dave, I just wouldn't have gone so far to class it where you did was all.

Any reason for the MSI mobo? I have a P55-GD80 myself and it's excellent  ;D

Last question:

HD 6950 or GTX 560 Ti? (1gb, around $250-270)

Literally the last decision I still have to make.

I see no advantages nor disadvantages for either of those. Unless someone can see any, I'd say choose the number/logo you like more.

Most people (after lurking for awhile) seem to agree that the HD scores better in the synthetic benchmarks, but the GTX performs better in games.... GTX it is. Thanks guys.

To my knowledge the GTX has better DX11 performance which is going to be very relevant in the next few years, so I'd go with that.

I've always stuck with nvidia. I never lost a card yet. You won't be able to tell the difference in a game anyway. Pick one that doesn't sound like a spin dryer in your computer case. That gets annoying really quickly. And check your case/mb, in case you need a low profile card or two available slots for the fan etc.

Hoped I could get some feedback from you guys.  I'm building a gaming-rig for a relative with a budget of $1000.  Here's what I was going for...

Case: Antec 900 Mid-ATX

MB: ASUS M4N75TD nVidia nForce 750a SLI-ready (AMD) Core Unlocking

GPU: 2 x EVGA GeForce GTX460 1gb SE in SLI

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series 650W ATX12V

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz (3rd and 4th cores unlockable)

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaw 8gb DDR3 1333

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 600gb SATA2 7200rpm

Optical Drive: ASUS 24x CD/DVD burner

+ Windows 7 OEM ($99), Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound, remover, and purifier ($20)

I'm a little over budget (the GPUs just came off of a great bargain, back up to $170ish with MIR)... any recomendations on where costs should be cut without sacrificing too much performance?

Don't you mean >$1000 PC?

If no one mentioned this (I didn't read the thread, just the last post), SLI is not worth the monetary increase. You also do not need 8GB of RAM. And I must say, that's an odd choice of hard drive.

Other than that, I could give a completely different set of parts to use, but it'll be a fine computer.

Step 2: Spend money
Doing it the other way around won't get you a good computer.

No, he's looking to build a pc that costs less than 1,000 dollars and he's asking what in that list needs taken out to make that happen.

I revamped and finsished my build the other day, I'll get on and post some benchmarks for anyone who may be interested.

My build:

Case: Raidmax Aztec ATX 619-WO (Orange) Twin MB-foldout

Motherboard: MSI USB 3.0 SATA3 6gb/s AMD 770 ATX

GPU:EVGA GeFORCE GTX470 Superclocked 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5

PSU: HEC X-Power 600W Continuous ATX 12V with dual-80MM blue LED fans

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 BE Callisto 3.2GHz (can't wait to overclock, already have it at 3.8GHz in my own PC)

SSD: Crucial 64GB 2.5" SATA3 Internal Solid State Disk (I also got a 2.5" to 3.5" bay converter)

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB 7200RPM SATA3

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw Series 4GB DDR3 1600

All this plus a Logitec MX518 1600DPI Mouse (fantastic mouse by the way, I own one myself), Windows 7 Home Premium OEM, ASUS CD/DVD burner, Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (gonna use on my GPU and CPU, probably), and 2 x SATA3 Cables

Really excited to get it running and benchmarked.  Stayed under budget, too!

Giving advice that directly contradicts the request doesn't even count as low credibility anymore. It's just downright bothersome retartedness.

Persisting as you do in spite of statements such as "a gaming PC" and "for my uncle" doesn't make you look very credible, either.  I'm not soft-ware savvy enough to use Linux, nor is my uncle.

1. Not paying for Windows doesn't necessarily mean that you don't use Windows.
2. You don't need to be "soft-ware [sic] savvy" to use Linux.
3. You not having used the most popular open source OS before doesn't make it "arcane," it makes you ignorant.

1.  ???

2.  Not what I've gathered, but if you feel differently, feel free to enlighten me

3.  I am indeed ignorant.  Windows has always been good to me, and my limited experience with open source OS's makes me think I don't have the time/energy to learn how to use them.

I'm curious, though, what you think would be a better solution than Windows for a gaming rig, one that's easy to use, etc.

I've just never been as interested in the software as much as I am the hardware.
