I'm sorry, I know this thing has been done a thousand times before. People are right to their opinions and beliefs, but this is just plain stupid.
For a start if I were to stand on the south coast of Ireland (seeing as I'm Irish I might as well use this example) and looked south, why am I not able to see Spain? If the world were flat I would not see the horizon. Or if I were to do it at night time, why can't I at least see lights?
If we are able to see light from much further away, why can't we see it from about 600 miles away? At that shouldn't you be able to see the Ice wall at the southern tip of Argentina then?
I suppose you are all entitled you your own opinions but if you really believe this you are clearly stupid.
I suppose the companies who make the GPS devices are in this together with the goverment? And I suppose NASA is really just a cover-up organisation for an even bigger conspiracy. I suppose Tom Crean was a part of this to. Aswell as those Norweigians? I suppose the U.S goverment blew up the twin towers aswell? For an unkown reason? Tell me this, what possible avail could there be for the goverment, I know I read the FAQ, but that's exactly my point! There is 100 times more proof to the Earth being round than there is to it being flat.

simple enough, the atmospheric distortion is caused by small particles, far more concentrated near the ground, which is the same reason you can see further when youre up higher, its like layers, only with a smooth transition.

But then surely the distortion would increase more and more towards the horizon, causing a gradual "dim out" effect, instead of practically no change on a clear day, until a sudden change at the horizon? I can see the tops of mountain perfectly clearly above the horizon across the Irish sea. No distortion, just the lower slopes are obscured by a horizon that ends sharply

When you look through 3 layers of glass, things look distorted or even invisible. When you turn on a light, it's still a bright light.

I dont know the distance of those two mountains, but there is still plenty of distortion, just not as much as eye-level

What are you going on about?  

I am currently looking through my eyeglasses, two window panes, the rear and from windshields of the pick truck outside, each has it's own amount of distortion, yet I can clearly see the leaves of the tree beyond the truck.  If I look into a distorted lens, or a bent mirror, the image distorts based on the angle of the light rays.  If I view the distorting lens or mirror at an angle, then it distorts unevenly.  

For example, take a distorting mirror, such as a make-up mirror.  Looking straight on, it magnifies the image.  Now, tilt the mirror.  As you do the image elongates and is quickly unrecognizable.  Use a pen light and the same thing happens.

No stupid....

The light blue stuff is the atmosphere. It 'stops' at a certain point, say a, that happens to be much smaller than the amount of air you have to look through from spain to ireland.

Before you ask your dumb question again all confused, but rephrased, the answer is nothing. A vaccumm, that's whats between the end of the atmosphere and stars.

Hum, excuse me,..but doesn't the fac tthat it's atmospheric distortion mea nanything? Atmospheric phenomenons happen a bit higher than ground level.

And what particles are you reffering to? And to be honest,  I don't see the smooth transition either.
