I guess it doesn't really prove anything, but it's still pretty cool.

Not really all that interesting. By comparison, how many airplane flights do not observe this?

In the perfect place at the perfect time.  Interesting.

Considering the number of commercial flights that take place daily in and around the United States, it is hardly surprising.

Considering how few shuttle launches there are, the size of the no-fly zone around the launch area and the fact that the shuttle takes about 2 minutes or so to reach an altitude of 150,000 feet, I'd say that it is quite surprising.

Well there you have it, 0.0001% of airplanes see this happen. a non-zero number. A number that would explain why there is a video of it on youtube!

I once flew from Miami to Charlotte NC. I was exhausted because it was only one leg of a loooooong international flight. I fell asleep not long after takeoff and woke up a few minutes later to see everybody was on one side of the plane looking out. The guy next to me said that one of the space shuttles had just launched and they could see it from the plane.

I never forgave myself for sleeping through it, haha.

Anyways, the flat earth people still haven't explained how this event works within the parameters of their theory.

Tomahawk Missile launch.  It's too bad the video stopped before the fuel ran out and the missile obtained a ballistic trajectory into the Atlantic Ocean.

I'm not saying that they are the same tomahawk missile launch.  I'm just saying that they are both missile launches.

Yes, it was meant to show the similarities between a tomahawk missile launch and an alleged shuttle launch.  As you can see, they look very much alike and a video of a launch from such a distance (the passenger seat of an airborne plane for instance) is indistinguishable from the other.  Thus, one cannot say that the object in the OP's video was indeed a shuttle bound for space.  It could have just as easily been any number of various types of objects; the most obvious being a missile.

I feel like you might get the impression that I'm patronizing you by have to so thoroughly explain a simple concept.  In the future, if you would like to avoid such embarrassment, please feel free to PM me and I shall explain the concepts over a private medium.

Cool attitude, bro. So are FET proponents now denying shuttle launches altogether? Or are you arbitrarily dismissing this particular video for no apparent reason other than to demonstrate how much smarter you are than the rest of us?

This is what I wanted to ask about the OP. No one is denying the space shuttle launches occasionally from Cape Canaveral.

Are you certain? It sounds like Pongo might be, at least in this instance, and I don't know why he would reject this instance and accept others. Perhaps he thinks that Tomahawk missiles are launched occasionally from Cape Canaveral, although I think that this would violate some local ordinances or something.

Except that shuttle launch times and dates are announced well in advance so that the general public can view them.  Missile launches, for the most part, are not.  It would be easy enough to get the time stamp from the video and compare it against the scheduled launch of a particular shuttle launch.

Also, the Tomahawk missile launch does not achieve nearly the same altitude of the smoke trail in the video.

Frankly, I don't really read Pongo's posts or take the ones I read seriously enough to reply to them.

NOTAMs are always issued from ETR. And that was definitely not a Tomahawk launch.

I wasn't really trying to make a point.  As I said, I don't believe this proves anything for or against.  I just thought it was interesting, and a happy coincidence.

We appear to have met some common ground. =)  I feel the same way about your posts being that this is the only one I can recall ever replying to.

Also, I'm not saying that people never strap giant rockets to a funny looking plane and shoot it out of sight.  I'm really asking how do you know it is in Florida and that is in fact a shuttle?  With NASA's recent budget issues, they are reduced to faking videos from a distance and using smaller rockets.

If you can demonstrate to me that it is indeed a shuttle launch in Florida, then I will concede my points and issue a full retraction and heartfelt apology.  Otherwise, I'm much more inclined to believe that this is the product budget constraints and a creative use of limited funds.

I suppose that I just assumed it was another insidious NASA conspiracy.  Perhaps I jumped to that conclusion.  Still not convinced it's a space shuttle though.

Perhaps you should have read the article accompanying the video:
Quote from: http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20110227/tr_yblog_upshot/space-shuttle-seen-from-above
On Thursday, the space shuttle Discovery blasted into space for its final mission. People around the world watched the liftoff, but only a lucky few got to see the shuttle from the skies.

Passengers on a flight from Orlando, Florida to Richmond, Virginia were treated to an unexpected kind of entertainment when they saw the Shuttle off of the left side of the plane.

One quick-thinking man named Neil Monday captured the experience on his iPhone. After he uploaded the two-minute clip to the Web, searches shot into the stratosphere. The video has been featured by multiple blogs and news agencies, including MSNBC.

What in that article could possibly lead you to believe that the video was anything but a space shuttle launch recorded by a non-NASA source?

I know your number was speculation, I don't care for the magnitude of the number, the only matter is that the probability of capturing such an event in a plane is non-zero. And you agree it happens, so why does your first post shout 'conspiracy'?
