PO Boxes and private mailboxes
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:09:59 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with these?  I might be vacating my present living arrangement, and I'm looking for a way to keep my mail going without too much interruption if I end up hopping around a little.  I can get a PO box from the USPS for about $60 a year, but you can't use that as a valid address in some cases (employment, applications for stuff, some web forms, etc).  I'm kind of looking into a private mailbox, but for the most part they seem OK until you want to close the box in which case either you have to get charged for everything redirected or they just throw it away.

Anyone have any suggestions?  I might just ask a friend to use their address, but I don't want to go that route if I don't have to.  Trying to get myself self sufficient.

We recently got a PO Box. I like it. I don't remember to check it every day, but it makes me less lazy for when I need to mail stuff, cuz I need to check the mail there anyways. Plus you have a nifty little key :D

Have you looked into Mailboxes, Etc. or some similar service?

@markjo: there arent any MBE's nearby, but UPS offers the same service. I've looked them up but havent been able to see a price anyway, and all the bitching on the internetz about their mailbox rental kind of turns me off. I dont think theres really any other places in the area that offer such a service though. Also @mr sudowoodo: yeah but you cant receive FES shirts and gear through the intertubes.

Go the mail redirection.  I've used it many times before and it has never failed.  You can also extend them if needed, and where I live, the post office will forward the new contact details on to the other companies/people.

You can go to the USPS and have your mail held for a while if you must.

What you mean mail redirection?

I'm not sure if I was clear in the OP; UPS offers private mailboxes like PO boxes but you can have a regular address with it.  However if you cancel your box with them, they have to charge you for any mail forwarding (otherwise they just throw it away).  It's partially not their fault, but it's still shitty.  I might just go ahead and go with the PO box with the USPS.  It's really not too terribly priced.

I'm not in the US so I don't know the system.  A mail redirection is filling in a simple form to explain to the post office organisation (USPS I guess in this case) that you will be moving from your old address to your new one and to resend or 'redirect' your mail there.  They apply to all  posted mail, parcels and boxes, registered post etc and last for about 3 months, but like said, are normally extendable.  I would find it hard to believe if the USPS doesn't offer a similar service.

Yes, they do have that, but it wont be very helpful if I don't have an address to forward to.  I may have to live out of my car for a while.

I don't want to ban you, I just want you to calm down.  Yes, the rules are relaxed here, but they aren't that relaxed.
