How can the world be flat?
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:32:01 PM »
It's simply not possible, in my opinion.
There are a few reasons.
1. If you were to see a sailing ship come over the horizon you would see the mast first.
2. During a Lunar eclipse the shadow on the moon is round.
3. Southern Constellations (like the ones we see here in Australasia) are not visible in the northern hemisphere and yet appear when you move south.
These were taken from a book by Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki. (Never Mind the Bullocks Heres the Science pg 81)
Also, all the laws of nature would have to be rewritten. Like gravity. How could the world be sustained in a disk shape with the law of gravity in place. And what about the other planets, they are all spheres, surely they cannot be optical illusions. And please don't even try to convince Antarctica doesn't exist. People have been there, penguins exist there. What about night! How can it be night in one place and day in the other if the world is flat! Even more simply, how could your phones work without the satellites that orbit the (ROUND) Earth!
Explain that!

Not satisfactorily, of course. But it does answer them in a fashion, yes.

Fools! How can you believe such rubbish!

You're not actually from Portugal, are you? Do they not teach Forum Etiquette there?

Regardless, if you're fluent then you might prove to be useful in coordinating certain day/night observational experiments, since apparently Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in the southern hemisphere, whatever that's worth.

This is really just a collection of basic questions, not a debate topic. Moving to Q&A.

Sure;  I can even supply pictures of myself with penguins if wished.

I believe you, but such a picture would be cool. So there's some exploration of the south pole that concurs with FET. Where's the limit though? It's not like this is lost, where if you attempt to go straight, you'll wind up ending up back where you started. And where on FE is the south pole station?

I'm pretty sure it's at the north pole.

Not all penguins live in antartica. In fact, some live north of the equator.

Are you serious?
So people fly downward from Australia, and get to the north pole, in a very short amount of time and without seeing the large land masses/oceans that are inbetween?

If they aren't answered correctly, don't complain about people asking them again.
How dare you have the audacity to demand my deposition. I've never even heard of you.

I don't mind them asking again, just as long as they show some evidence that they have at least read the answer in the FAQ first.

The gravity idea for a flat earth would be impossible, as you would have to constantly be accelerating, which according to quantum physics is impossible, but you probably think thats a conspiracy as well right?
The whole concept of a flat earth is flawed in so many ways, at least RE'rs have some kind of proof, pictures etc. even if you think their photoshopped (yeah Photoshop 1958).  You have no evidence of the world being flat, any pictures to beyond any shadow of a doubt that the earth is flat.... NO, for a round earth (well technically its not a sphere its more elliptical than anything), YES we do....

There are a few reasons.
1. If you were to see a sailing ship come over the horizon you would see the mast first.

This is unproven. Some ships actually come over the horizon hull first followed by the mast. This, alone, would be evidence for a hollow earth. However if we average the results we conclude that the earth is flat.

2. During a Lunar eclipse the shadow on the moon is round.

This relates to the migratory effects of the moon shrimp and your unique view point. Essentially its an optical illusion.

3. Southern Constellations (like the ones we see here in Australasia) are not visible in the northern hemisphere and yet appear when you move south.

Intersteller gas clouds block the view.

And please don't even try to convince Antarctica doesn't exist. People have been there, penguins exist there.

Antarctica doesn't not exist, but the Conspiracy headquarters at the edge of the earth does. "Penguins" are in fact robot killers designed to keep people out of the Conspiracy HQ.

Exploration of the south pole is usually just going through large peninsulas.

That could be anywhere John. You can buy penguins very cheap and probably negotiate a bulk discount.

The truth is NO ONE has ever been to Antarctica. Because if you even tried you would be killed by the Conspiracy.

That was not Antarctica, that was on the coast of South America.

I was disallowed access to Antarctica, but I doubt no one has ever been there or that there is some global conspiracy.

Sorry John, unless you can show me someone who has actually been to Antarctica then we must assume that it is the headquarters of a worldwide conspiracy.

You are a fool, sir.  Nothing more than a court jester.  Your impudence has exhausted the benefit of your good reason.

If anywhere is the headquarters to the worldwide conspiracy, clearly its Rome.  You speak with stolen words.

You both are fool, kind sir. It wouldn't be their headquarters if it's so easily conceived. If anything, I think the conspiracy would use the underground as their headquarters, or maybe even situated inside the turtle. You can never assume too much when it comes to the conspiracy.
