Phases of the Moon
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:34:57 PM »
As I was browsing through the wiki, I came upon this article detailing the phases of the moon. Many questions came to mind and I hope they can be answered by FE believers.

Quote
When one observes the phases of the moon he is simply observing the moon's day and night, a natural shadow from the sun illuminating half of the spherical moon at any one time.
The wiki states that the moon is spherical and has a day and night cycle, why can't this be applied to the Earth? We see this day and night cycle here on Earth daily.

Why does everyone see the same phase?

Q: Why does everyone on earth see the same phase of the moon?

A: They don't. The phase you see varies depending on your location on earth. In FET this is explained by the different observers standing on either side of the moon. On one side it is right-side up, and on the other side it is upside down.
For simplicity's sake, let's use a half-moon. The wiki states that the moon will appear to be upside down from how it appears from the opposite side of the equator. Does it matter which side is lit and which side is dark if you are still seeing the same surface area of the moon from wherever you are on Earth? I don't think orientation means much if you're still seeing the same area of the moon.

Answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated. Also, hello to the forums, this is my first post.
