Sounds like he may have originated in the Philippines.

Nevertheless, his lectures were very difficult to follow.

English is a funny and confusing language.  I tried to explain to a co-worker speaks english as a second language how to tell the difference between the word "live", and the word "live".  Two separate words, spelled the same, yet pronounced differently.  For example:

1.  I'm sorry, you only have about 6 months to live.

2.  Live from New York it's Saturday Night!

Confused the hell out of him.

Which brings us to  how to pronounce 'long-lived.'  Perhaps a majority pronounce it as if it stems form the verb but the stem is from the noun.  Even native speakers get confused.  ;D
I say it with the long 'i'. But then I don't say it often, and that is just my pronunciation of it rather than a knowledge of the root word.
Always check your tackle- Caerphilly school of Health. If I see an innuendo in my post, I'll be sure to whip it out.

Hmm...I suspect that it's a US/UK distinction. The only time I've heard it pronounced with a long i is in the film adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance, in which I believe it's rhymed with "contrived", but I never knew if this was poetic license at work or simply a British accent.

Well, since G+S rhyme

"In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy,"
With
"You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee..."

I think we can be confident that it's poetic license.

Haha, I love that lyric! Pirates of Penzance is my favorite musical by far, a genre I don't usually enjoy. But the lyric in question makes sense, technically. "Gee" isn't being mispronounced (it's just short for "gee-gee" which is slang for horse), but I agree that it's definitely a stretch and I understand the spirit of your argument.

However, I maintain the assertion that I've never heard short-"lighved" here in the states.

I just meant they stretched lyrics to fit quite often.

I've never seen any of ther plays from start to finish but I did once try to learn the Major General song, got to the point where he's blathering about Gerard Dowes and Zoffanies before my brain shut down!

I've never hearded Lie-ved before, either.

Wow! I just looked up the complete lyrics, that's crazy. The film version I'm referring to omits some stuff, including that part, but I still highly recommend it (the 1983 film, as opposed to the other stage productions released).

Favourite line is "In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous" it just flows off the tongue so nicely.

I shall have to have a look for that one, and a full version of HMS Pinafore.

Well, it depends on the word. Nulear and Nucular aren't really matters of concern but if someone wants to axe something, should you run or be prepared to answer questions?

I have actually had someone say "can I axe you something" that was a weird situation

Generally having crazy looking people walking up to you on the street saying "can I axe you something" could be described as a weird situation
